Birthday special: Aamir Khan’s dramatic transformations


Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan turns 52 today. Aamir comes from a film background. His father is film producer Tahir Hussain and his paternal uncle is the famous producer-director Nasir Hussain in whose 1973 film ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’ he made a brief appearance as a child. Although Aamir debuted with coming-of-age drama ‘Holi’, he shot to fame with the cult romance film ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ for which he bagged the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award. He also has four National Film Awards under his belt. Aamir has been honoured with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010.

Aamir never fails to mesmerise the audience and critics with his wide range of roles in his movies. He is called Mr. Perfectionist not for nothing. He is known to go to great lengths to get under the skin of the characters he plays. Let’s check out some films where Aamir underwent a transformation in his look for his role.  

In his latest film ‘Dangal’, Aamir played the role of an amateur wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who grooms his daughters to become world class wrestlers. The actor went drastic transformation for his character in the movie. First, he gained oodles of weight, an additional 25 kg to weigh 95 kg to play the older version of the wrestler, and also got a pot-belly. He then trained hard to lose the extra 25 kg in 25 weeks to get the fit, sturdy and tough look for the younger version of the wrestler. He also sported a moustache for the role. Besides, for the promotional song ‘Dhaakad’ which Aamir sang himself, the actor turned a rapper with spiked hair, blingy rings on fingers and ears, and khol-lined eyes.

Aamir has undergone a makeover for his upcoming production ‘Secret Superstar’ in which he has an extended cameo. He will be seen in a funky, never-seen-before avatar. The teaser of the film was released late last year, and the actor is seen sporting a moustache and balbo beard. His hair is spiked and coloured, and he is wearing rings and ear studs. His mannerisms and accent were also quirky.

In his 2014 blockbuster ‘PK’, Aamir played an alien who lands on Earth naked. His look carrying the tape-recorder, sporting a yellow helmet and blank expression with wide-open eyes with green lenses, became intrinsic part of the look of his character. He also reportedly, added put something behind his already large ears to make them pop-out a bit more.

Aamir sported two specific looks in his 2008 film ‘Ghajini’. One was the role of a dapper entrepreneur. And for the look of anterograde amnesia patient, he sported a chiselled and muscular look, and went bare bodied and almost bald. He reportedly, devoted nine months to get the physique then.

Aamir’s 2005 film ‘Mangal Pandey: The Rising’ may not have done wonders at the box-office, but his look sporting a bushy handle-bar moustache and long locks is memorable.

Aamir was around 44-45 years while shooting for Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘3 Idiots’, in which he played a college goer. He convincingly transformed himself to look half his age as a college student in his 20s.

Aamir proved that no role is too small for a challenge when he made a special appearance in a song in his production ‘Delhi Belly’ starring his nephew Imran Khan. He was unrecognisable as the ‘Disco Fighter’, sporting blingy glasses and other funky accessories.
