Big B appointed as Maharashtra's tiger ambassador

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has given his consent to become Maharashtra's tiger ambassador. The decision to make him the face of tiger protection was taken in the meeting of the Tiger Protection Foundation held in Nagpur in July. The proposal was given by the state finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, who is also the state's forest minister.

On his direction, Bachchan was requested to become state’s tiger ambassador. Accordingly, a letter was sent to the iconic actor on July 29, World Tiger Day.

"Considering the popularity and legendary image of Bachchan, he was an automatic choice to be appointed as tiger ambassador which will be instrumental in bringing awareness among the citizen of the state towards protection and preservation of tigers," Mungantiwar said.

In a letter dated Monday, Bachchan wrote to Mungantiwar, accepting the offer to render his services towards the state government's tiger conservation initiative. "This letter may kindly be treated as my consent to represent the Maharashtra as its tiger ambassador," said Bachchan, while also complimenting Mungantiwar for giving detailed attention to "this most essential campaign".

"Superstar Amitabh Bachchan has approved our appeal to be the tiger ambassador," said Mungantiwar, adding that the 'Piku' star had not asked for any fee for rendering the service.

"Public participation is necessary for conservation... we will use his (Bachchan's) importance in society for creating the need for this conservation in the minds of people," said Mungantiwar.

“I am confident that involvement of citizens in the save tiger movement will convert it into a popular movement with the help of Amitabh Bachchan”, he added.
