‘Begum Jaan’ trailer: Vidya balan is fierce, Chunky Pandey is unrecognisable
‘Begum Jaan’ is the remake of critically acclaimed Bengali film ‘Rajkahini’ and is set during the India-Pakistan partition of 1947. National Award winning director Srijit Mukherji, who helmed the Bengali movie, is making his foray into Bollywood with the film which also stars other talented artistes like Naseeruddin Shah, Rajit Kapur, Ashish Vidyarthi, Ila Arun, Pallavi Sharda, Gauhar Khan and Chunky Pandey.
The trailer begins with a voiceover by Amitabh Bachchan who narrates the premise of the Indo-Pak partition and how the brothel house fell on the line of border between the two countries, but the determined Begum Jaan, with her girls and loyal people, fought fiercely against the authorities for their home, pride and respect.
The trailer goes on to show Vidya as a bold and strong woman taking up arms against the authorities who order her to vacate her home. She displays her anger in a very controlled and is intense. She mouths some hard-hitting dialogues. “Mahina humme ginna aata hai Sahab, hamesha laal karke jaata hai (We know what is a month end, it always comes and paints us red),” she says at the end of the trailer when she is warned that only one month is left for her to leave the place.
Ashish Vidyarthi and Rajit Kapoor play representatives of the then British government, while Nasseruddin Shah plays a royal who often uses the ‘services’ of Begum Jaan’s brothel. Chunky Pandey looks almost unrecognisable with an almost bald look. He plays a cunning local who is approached by the authorities to remove Begum Jaan. Gauhar Khan, Ila Arun and other actors also hold their own.
Produced by Vishesh Films, ‘Begum Jaan’ is scheduled to release in theatres on 14 April 14.
