‘Bajirao Mastani’ becomes 12th highest grosser of all time

Historical romance film ‘Bajirao Mastani’ starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra has become the 12th highest grossing movies of all time.

The film which released on December 18, 2014 has had a consistent long run at the domestic box office for over a month now, which is a rare achievement for Bollywood films these days. After completion of its month-long run at theatres the total domestic collections of ‘Bajirao Mastani’ stood at Rs 184.16 crores.

Bollywood trade analyst revealed the figures and called the movie’s performance “superb” on his Twitter page. “#BajiraoMastani [Week 5] Fri 80 lacs, Sat 1.05 cr, Sun 1.30 cr. Total: ? 184.16 cr. India biz. SUPERB!” he posted.

It is said that filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted to make ‘Bajirao Mastani’ for the last many years, but somehow it didn’t work out due to changing casts. While working on his 2013 romance ‘Goliyoon Ki Raasleela: Ram Leela’ he spotted the appropriate star cast and decided to materialize his dream project. Known to make visually spectacular and larger-than-life films, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ did turn out to be a marvel.

The film hit screens along with other highly anticipated films of the year ‘Dilwale’, it was thought that ‘Bajirao Mastani’ wouls lose the box office battle to the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer. Though ‘Dilwale’ made a great start, it could not sustain mostly because of the bad reviews. On the other hand, due to strong word of mouth and steady run at box office, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ took over ‘Dilwale’ by the end of first week itself.

It also became the third highest grosser movie of 2015 after Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

Not just this, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ is also set to be the first non-Khan film to cross Rs 100 crore mark in the international market. After its fifth weekend (on Jan 17), the collections of the film stood at Rs. 98.12 cr ($14.5 million), overtaking the overseas earnings of Salman Khan's ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ and Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Jab Hai Jaan.’

Taran Adarsh tweeted about it: “And #BajiraoMastani is all set to cross ? 100 cr in international markets... Total till Sun [17 Jan]: $ 14.5 million [? 98.12 cr]. SUPERB!” he posted on Tuesday, January 19.
