‘Sairat’ becomes highest grossing Marathi film ever


National Award winning director Nagraj Manjule’s Marathi film ‘Sairat’ has become the highest grossing Marathi film ever and has been declared an All Time Blockbuster at the box office.

Starring Akash Thosar and Rinku Rajguru, the film has collected over Rs. 65 crore in three weeks. After releasing with limited screen count in its first week, the film entered the fourth week with 525 screens, which is a big screen count for any Indian movie after completing so many days of release.

‘Sairat’ is among the rare films that have shown phenomenal growth at the box office. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh revealed the information on his Twitter timeline by posting, “Marathi film #Sairat does a whopping ? 65 cr+ nett biz in 3 weeks ... Enters Week 4 at more than 525 screens. ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER!"

‘Sairat’ deals with the sensitive matter of casteism, especially in innocent love affairs. It focuses on a young couple who faces violence and oppression because they belong to different castes. It has become a landmark film in the history of not just regional cinema, but Indian cinema as a whole.

The film was screened at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival held in February this year, where it received standing ovation.

Rinku, the lead actress who is barely 15 years old, won a special mention at this year’s National Film Awards for her performance in Sairat. Noted Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and Irrfan Khan have also praised the movie.

“Just saw Sairat. I'm heartbroken, still recovering from the shock of the end. Congratulations to Nagraj, Ajay-Atul, Rinku Rajguru, Akash Thosar, Tanaji Galgunde, Arbaaz Shaikh, the entire cast and crew & to Zee. Please watch it if you haven't already,” Aamir tweeted.

Irrfan also praised the movie and wrote, “Hats off to new face of Indian cinema #Sairat #NagrajManjule. Thats the way to go !!”

Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap tweeted, “Sairaat surprises you, makes you laugh, fall in love, then brings throws you back on ground, before pulling it off from under you ..”

The film was also released in English subtitles in other states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Hyderabad. Producer Nitin Keni, CEO-Founder of EsselVision Productions, also said that they are planning to make the Telugu version of the film, followed by a Gujarati and Hindi versions.
