AR Rahman gets Oscar nomination for his 3 films

A R Rahman fans might have a good reason to celebrate. After all, the music maestro is once again in the race for Oscars! He finally made it to the list of 114 probable. This list of contenders was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences last Friday. Three films, namely ‘The Hundred Foot Journey’, ‘Million Dollar Arm’ and ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ blessed with Rahman’s music have been nominated.

Already having achieved two Oscars for his outstanding tunes in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, the virtuoso now stands another chance with three nominations. Rahman has composed all of the seven tracks of ‘Million Dollar Arm’. Director Craig Gillespe had taken the wise decision to recruit Rahman the day Gillespe had commenced the project with Disney Films. Finding the film’s plot utterly delightful, Rahman started composing the soundtrack in 2013, completing the project in February 2014. He later said, "For three years, I was avoiding Indian-based subjects in Hollywoodas I was anyway doing them in Hindi. The last thing I wanted was to be typecast as a composer who’d only work on English films with an Indian setting. But when this script came along, I thought it was a good time to start again. It helped that the story was also hybrid in nature. Million Dollar Arm is more contemporary. In terms of music, it is more orchestral.”

Rahman was initially hesitant regarding ‘Kochadaiiyaan’, but he later agreed to compose the soundtrack as well as the background score- stating that he now felt  the "positive energy and the commitment” to work for it. Completing the final phase of the recording at his Chennai studio, he happily told the Hindu, "For the war sequence, we got 150 people scream like how they would in a war and recorded the sound. I went to fortresses and collected samples of how sound resonates. Based on the impulse response data, we recreated the acoustics of a durbar."

The Gulzar- Rahman duo proved lucky for both as they together won Oscar for ‘Jai Ho’; naturally people have high hopes for ‘Afreen’ from ‘The Hundred Foot Journey’ which has been written by Gulzar. Hollyowood Tracks released the soundtrack featuring an original and high energy score in August 2014, when Rahman said, "It was such a pleasure working with Lasse Hallstrom. Lasse loves what I love the most, the musical melodies and warmth. I hope people like what we came up with. God bless!!"
