Amitabh Bachchan wins the National Award for the third time

Amitabh Bachchan is in the midst of shooting Ramgopal Varma’s film Sarkar Raj along with son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya in the South. About the experience of working with his son and daughter-in-law, Amitabh says “It’s been wonderful.” About Sarkar Raj, he says “I think it’s going well and is as intense as the first one.” Amitabh recently won the National Award for Best Actor for the third time and this time it was for his film Black. Amitabh is extremely happy and said “I am deeply grateful to the government and the jury for considering me, and more importantly, for considering Black.”
Amitabh is extremely grateful and happy that he has bagged the National Award for the third time and also for the film Black. However there were several controversies surrounding the National Award, firstly the awards were delayed by a year as there was some legal hassle in court. There were also some controversies regarding the jury being pressurised to give the award to Amitabh. However Amitabh Bachchan takes even this controversy in his stride and says “The body of distinguished people chosen by State authorities to represent a committee are very able and accomplished individuals, working within their own creative and artistic capabilities, guided of course by a set rules and regulations. They know their job. We are no one to question them.”

Amitabh is thrilled that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film has received such honour and recognition and he says “I'm happy for the film and Sanjay Bhansali. Black rates very highly in my repertoire. I cannot say if it is the finest. I hope the finest is yet to come. It's always a challenge to better what you have done before.” However there is one thing that has disappointed Amitabh and that is, his co-star Rani Mukherjee not receiving the National Award for Best actress in the film Black. Bachchan continues “but I am sad for Rani who did not get an award for her performance. When she called me to express her joy about my award, her temperament was exactly like when we saw the first copy of the film. But we must respect the decision of the jury and acknowledge Sarika for her performance.” Amitabh nonetheless gives Rani credit, claiming her role in the film was mainly responsible for the success of the film.

Amitabh recently also proved that he can give the young, talented newcomers a run for their money when he personally volunteered to do a risky stunt himself instead of using a body double. Amitabh was shooting for the film Bhootnath and there was a scene where he had to fall down a flight of stairs. Director Sharma already had a body double waiting to do the scene when Amitabh refused and asked to perform the stunt himself. So Amitabh went ahead and shot the scene and as there were retakes he also had to hang in mid air from cables till the next shot was ready. In fact Amitabh even joked around with the director saying “Arre teri aisi ki taisi, kya karva raha hai mujhse” But he was only interested in pleasing the director and even volunteered to do it all over again if he was not happy with the shot. The director though was concerned about Amitabh as he is 66 yrs old and has recently undergone an operation, but later he was as excited as Amitabh. After Amitabh performed the risky stunt the entire unit clapped and cheered him on. Amitabh confirmed that he shot the risky stunt saying “Yes, I did it. I had to dive off the first floor over a staircase.”

Well Amitabh is currently excited with the kind of films that he is doing. He recently finished Ramgopal Varma Ki Aag (Sholay remake). Next year he is also looking forward to his world tour concert along with Abhi, Ash and perhaps Akshay Kumar, Bipasha Basu, Lara Dutta, Ritesh Deshmukh, etc. Along with Amitabh, his fans too wish that his finest performance is yet to come in many of his forthcoming films.
