Akshay takes up Ice Bucket Challenge, challenges Salman

Thanks to the immense reaching power of social media, the Ice Bucket Challenge (sometimes, ALS Ice Bucket Challenge) has become the latest pop culture phenomenon. It is a simple activity in which you have to pour a bucket of ice water over your head or else donate money to ALS Association in the United States to spread awareness about the disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

While the exact origin of the challenge is hard to determine, it received much public attention when former US baseball player and ALS patient, Pete Frates started posting about the challenge on social networking sites. Soon a large number of US celebrities, politicians and regular citizens started taking up the challenge. Notable participants include, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Lady Gaga and more. The Ice Bucket Challenge is now becoming globally popular with international sports stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar joining the fray.

With so much craze around the world, our very own Indian celebrities have started to take up the challenge too. Since it is associated with a noble cause, the Ice Bucket Challenge has found acceptance in India as well. Indian sportspersons were the first people to take up the challenge. Badminton player Ashwini Ponnappa, Tennis players Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna- all has taken up the challenge and in turn has challenged other celebs.

Bollywood is now catching up with the trend. Popular actor Ritiesh Deshmukh recently poured the bucket of ice water over his head and challenged some of his industry colleagues including superstar Akshay Kumar. Akshay, who is known for his daredevil stunts and sporting nature did not waste much time and took up the Ice Bucket Challenge. The actor currently is in Cape Town, South Africa shooting for TV reality show "Dare 2 Dance".  He was joined by the crew and participants of the show. The video of the challenge was uploaded on YouTube and also on the actor’s Twitter account.

In the video Akshay is heard saying, "I am in Cape Town, the temperature here is 8 degrees. I am shooting here for 'Dare 2 Dance' and I have 11 contestants with me. My friend Riteish Deshmukh has dared me to take the ice bucket challenge and I'm ready… I am using sea water because I don't want fresh water to be wasted" After completing the challenge, Akshay challenged another Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan along with his wife Twinkle Khanna and Johnny Lever.
