Akshay Kumar turns 48; here are his eight ‘Khiladi’ movies

Akshay Kumar is one of those stars who dishes out the maximum number of movies each year. In 2015 itself he has already had three releases – ‘Baby’, ‘Gabbar Is Back’ and ‘Brothers’, and all were blockbusters. His upcoming movie ‘Singh Is Bliing’ is set to hit screens in a month’s time and he has already begun shooting for the multi-starrer ‘Houseful 3’. He is one of the highest paid actors not just in Bollywood but also among Hollywood stars like Johnny Depp and Leonardo De Caprio.

Be it action, comedy or romance, Akshay is at ease with every performance. He started out in the early 1990s doing action roles and displayed his romantic prowess and eventually came showed his terrific comic timing. He is known for his daredevil actions and prefers to do most of his stunts himself.

He is popularly called the ‘Khiladi’ Kumar of Bollywood. As Akshay celebrates his 48th birthday today (September 9), let’s have a look at his ‘Khiladi’ films that earned him the sobriquet.


Abbas-Mustan directorial suspense thriller ‘Khiladi’ in 1992 is widely considered his breakthrough role and was his first hit film. Also starring Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori and Sheeba, the film was critically acclaimed and became one of the highest grossing films of that year.

Main Khiladi Tu Anadi

The action comedy flick Main Khiladi Tu Anadi was directed by Sameer Malkan in 1994. The super-hit film was a remake of the English movie ‘The Hard Way’. It also starred Shilpa Shetty, Saif Ali Khan and singer-actress Raageshwari. While the action part belonged to Akshay’s Inspector Karan, the comedy was put in by Saif’s role.

Sabse Bada Khiladi

Akshay Kumar starrer hit action thriller ‘Sabse Bada Khiladi’ which released in 1995 was directed by Umesh Mehra. The film was an adaptation of Ved Prakash Sharma’s Hindi novel ‘Lallu’. Mamta Kulkarni played the female lead while Mohnish Behl, Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Gulshan Grover played the negative characters.

Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi

Umesh Mehra’s 1996 offering ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khaladi’ starred the gorgeous Rekha in a negative role. Raveena Tandon played Akshay’s love interest who was Rekha’s sister in the film. The film also featured a couple of former WWE wrestlers. The super-hit movie went to become the sixth highest grosser of the year.

Mr and Mrs Khiladi

Directed by king of comedy David Dhawan, ‘Mr and Mrs Khiladi’ starring Akshay Kumar and Juhi Chawla was a blockbuster of 1997. The movie was a remake of 1992 Telugu hit film ‘Aa Okkati Adakku’. The film also stars Kader Khan and Satish Kaushik. Paresh Rawal plays the role of a narrator in the film.

International Khiladi

Director Umesh Mehra paired Akshay Kumar with his future wife Twinkle Khanna for his 1996 action flick ‘International Khiladi’. Twinkle played the role of a journalist who falls in love with a criminal, played by Akshay, when she goes to interview him.

Khiladi 420

Directed by Neeraj Vora, action film ‘Khiladi 420’ released towards the end of year 2000. The film featured Mahima Chaudhry opposite Akshay Kumar who was seen in a double role. It is said that Akshay performed some of his most dangerous stunts during the shoot of this film. It also starred Alok Nath, Gulshan Grover and Antara Mali.  

Khiladi 786

Filmmaker Ashish R Mohan directed Akshay Kumar in ‘Khiladi 786’ which released in 2012. Asin Thottumkal played the female lead. The film also featured singer-actor Himesh Reshammiya as a wedding planner as well as Mithun Chakraboty and Raj Babbar. A funny thing about the film is that all the members of Akshay’s on-screen family have their names in Hindi numerical like ‘Sattar’ (70), ‘Ikhatar’ (71), ‘Bahattar’ (72) etc.
