Akshay Kumar to play hockey legend Balbir Singh in ‘Gold’

Akshay Kumar will reportedly portray the character of former Indian hockey player Balbir Singh in upcoming movie ‘Gold’ to be helmed by ‘Talaash’ director Reema Kagti. The ‘Airlift’ actor recently shared a teaser poster of the film on his Twitter handle.

From the poster, it is revealed that ‘Gold’ will be a sports-based film set in 1948 about Independent India’s first Olympic medal at the XIV Olympiad in London. The Olympic Gold medal was brought home by the hockey team, led by Kishan Lal. Though it was the fourth consecutive win at Olympics, it was the first time for independent India in 1948.

The poster also announced the scheduled release date of the film which is on Independence Day, 2018.

"Though the world is aware of Dhyan Chand, there is another Hockey hero who has ironically not been talked about in the same breath. However, the fact is that Balbir Singh was the hero of the gold campaign that Indian enjoyed not just in 1948 but also in 1952 and 1956 Olympics," DNA quoted a source as saying.

Akshay’s last film ‘Rustom’ was also based on the real-life incident of Naval officer KM Nanavati and the actor stepped into the shoes of the Naval officer for the big screen. His ‘Airlift’ was also the big screen adaptation of history’s biggest human evacuation programme by India during the Gulf war of the 1990s.

Meanwhile, Akshay has a string of films lined up. His ‘Jolly LLB 2’ starring Anu Kapoor, Saurab Shukla, Huma Qureshi and Elli Avram, is slated to hit theatres on February 10, 2017. His film with Neeraj Pandey titled ‘Crack’ is scheduled for Independence Day next year. Akshay is also working on ‘Toilet-Ek Prem Katha’ and ‘Namastey England’, which is a sequel to his 2007 hit ‘Namaste London’.
