Aishwarya to play Dalbir Kaur in Omung Kumar’s biopic ‘Sarabjit’

Bollywood diva Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will play the role of Sarabjit’s elder sister Dalbir Kaur in ‘Mary Kom’ director Omung Kumar’s forthcoming biopic on the slain Indian prisoner in Pakistan.

When Omung had earlier declared about this project he had told in an interview, “We are looking for strong, bold, powerful, bindaas, fiery...feisty (actress). We are not focusing more on getting the physicality right...we are not looking to have a duplicate of Dalbir Kaur.”

Names of actresses like Priyanka Chopra, Sonakshi Sinha, Kangana Ranaut and Deepika Padukone were doing the rounds.

Sarabjit was a farmer from Punjab’s Bhikhiwind, just 5 kms away from the Indo-Pakistan border. In 1990, in an inebriated state, he had crossed over to Pakistan and got mistaken as an Indian spy and was convicted of terrorism and spying by a Pakistani court.

Sarabjit was kept in a Lahore jail for 23 years, before he was killed by inmates following the execution of death sentence of Parliament attack-convict Afzal Guru in India.

The victim’s 61-year-old sister, who treated him like her son, could meet him only thrice in jail during these 23 years. She had determined to get him released, but did not succeed. Therefore, she decided to tell the world her brother’s real story through a film based on Sarabjit’s life.

Padma Shri awardee  Aishwariya, who has proved her acting mettle in films like ‘Devdas’, ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Chokher Bali’ and several others has agreed to play Dalbir’s part in the film, according to reports in a daily. The cast for Sarabjit’s role is yet to be finalised.

The film titled ‘Sarabjit’ will be directed by Omung and will be produced by writer-actor-turned-producer Zeishan Quadri. The film will go on floors in October and will be shot majorly in Punjab.
