After 19 years, Maratha Mandir to stop DDLJ screening

The iconic romantic drama 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' (DDLJ) starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol is to be removed from Maratha Mandir. The cinema hall has been witnessing regularly show since the film released in 1995. Over two decades, every show run houseful.

However, this December, DDLJ completes 1000 weeks and the theatre's managing director, Manoj Desai has decided to put curtains down for DDLJ.

Desai says, "We may not show this film after December once it completes 1000 weeks. Over the years, we got good response as the cinema hall is close to the Mumbai Central railway station and state transport bus stand. Recently, the collection has taken a nosedive and, therefore, we are thinking of discontinuing the show."

The theatre authorities are planning to talk to filmmaker of DDLJ Aditya Chopra. "The film is regularly aired on television and it has been nearly 20 years since it was released. So, the entire generation has watched it and we have also had the audience, which has seen it more than 100 times. But we feel that this particular screen can be used for other shows now. The final decision will be taken once we have the consent of all stakeholders," he adds.

However, another report says Desai has no such plans. "We are not planning to remove DDLJ show. It was a false report. In fact, this December DDLJ will be in its 1,000 week," Desai said.

The matinee show of Maratha Mandir has been booked for DDLJ. "We have DDLJ show daily at 11.30 a.m. and on weekdays there is 40 to 50 percent occupancy and on the weekend it runs houseful.

"Myself and Aditya Chopra will continue to show the film in Maratha Mandir as long as we want to," he added.
