Actress Reema Lagoo dies after cardiac arrest; Bollywood mourns

Renowned Bollywood and television actress Reema Lagoo passed away in the wee hours of Thursday following a cardiac arrest. She was 59. Reema was rushed to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, where she breathed her last at 3.30 am.

Reema is survived by her daughter Mrunmayee, also an actress. Her last rites will be held later today.

Reema Lagoo was born Nayan Khadbade in 1958. She took the name Reema Lagoo after her marriage to Marathi actor Vivek Lagoo. They separated a few years after marriage, but the actress retained the name.

Reema is known for her works in Marathi theatre, besides several blockbuster Bollywood films with top stars like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar. She was popular for her TV shows like ‘Tu Tu Main Main’ and ‘Shriman Shrimati’ and was playing the role of antagonist Dayavanti Mehta in Mahesh Bhatt’s ongoing TV series ‘Naamkaran’.

The news of the sudden demise of Reema Lagoo has left the film and television in a state of shock. Several actors expressed their grief and condoled her death.

Veteran actor Alok Nath, who has worked with the actress in several movies, including ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!’ and ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’, was shaken and found it hard to put his emotions into words.

“This is a horrible horrible news. I am just too sad to think about anything. She was such a fine actor to work with. This is very sad,” he told The Indian Express over phone.

Boman Irani and Rishi Kapoor took to their respective Twitter handled to pay their condolences to the departed soul.

“Our very dear Reema Lagoo is no more. Always kind, funny and loving. Saddened. RIP #ReemaLagoo,” wrote Boman Irani. Rishi Kapoor shared a picture of the late actress and tweeted, “RIP. Worked in quite a few films. Reema Lagoo. Good friend. Heartfelt condolences.”

Amitabh Bachchan lamented her demise saying that "such a fine talent (was) gone so young."

Priyanka Chopra called the late actress everyone's "favourite screen mom" and conveyed her condolences to the family.

Akshay Kumar, who worked with Reema in films like ‘Yeh Dillagi’, wrote, "Saddened to hear about the demise of #ReemaLagoo, had the opportunity to work with her...a fine actress and person. Prayers to the family."

Politician Vasundhara Raje and filmmaker Kunal Kohli also condoled her demise.
