Actors who lost their lives in accidents

Days within news broke out that ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ actor Madhur Mittal had faced a near-fatal accident, Bollywood ‘dream girl’ Hema Malini suffered injuries in a car crash on the night of July 2 in Rajasthan’s Dausa district.

The veteran actress-turned politician fractured her nose and received injuries to her forehead, and was discharged from hospital within three days after treatment. Madhur, who played the role of Salim in the Danny Boyle directorial, was less fortunate.

The ‘Million Dollar Arm’ actor who had rammed his car against a stationary truck in Dahisar, Mumbai earlier in June, remained in an unconscious state for 10 days in the hospital’s ICU. He also had to undergo multiple surgeries to mend his broken jaw,teeth, arm and clots in the brain. Although discharged now, he is barely able to speak and is advised bed-rest. He will need another few months to recover fully.

Many other actors too were fortunate to survive accidents with injuries or unhurt, but not all were lucky enough. Several actors across the nation ranging from the small screen to the silver screen were Paart of accidents that proved fatal for them.

Noted comedian and filmmaker Jaspal Bhatti, who is remembered for his hit satirical comedy series of the 1990s ‘Flop Show’ died after the car he was travelling in hit a tree causing him serious head injuries. Bhatti succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital, in October 2012. His son Jasraj who was driving the vehicle was also badly hurt. They were driving to Jalandhar from Bhatinda to promote his film ‘Power Cut’ starring his son, which released the day after Bhatti died.

Bhatti appeared in films like ‘Fanaa’, ‘Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche’, ‘Aa Ab Laut Chalen’ and Punjabi film ‘Jijaji’. He also directed a satire Punjabi film ‘Mahaul Theek Hai’ starring Raj Babbar.

Child artiste Taruni Sachdev who appeared in Amitabh Bachchan-starrer ‘Paa’ (2009) was killed in a in a plane crash in Nepal in 2012 at the mere age of 14. She was among the 13 Indians who lost their lives in the crash. ‘Rasna girl’ Taruni had appeared in over 50 commercials and was a popular child actor in the Southern film industry.

Fourty eight-year-old Anand Abhyankar who was seen in Mahesh Manjrekar's 1999 film ‘Vaastav’ starring Sanjay Dutt and ‘Jis Desh Me Ganga Rehta Hain’ alongside Govinda, died in an accident when the car he was travelling in was hit by a tempo on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in 2012.

The Marathi actor had also worked in Saurabh Shukla's ‘Pappu Can't Dance Saala’ and the popular television comedy series ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’.     

Anand’s colleague actor Akshay Pendse who was travelling with him also lost his life in the accident. Thirty five year-old Akshay was an active theatre personality and had appeared in Marathi movies like ‘Kai Dyayche Bola’. Both the actors were returning from the shoot of a show in which they played father and son, when the mishap occurred.

Popular filmstar of southern cinema Soundarya who played the female lead in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Sooryavansham’ was killed in an air crash in April, 2004 at the age of 27. The actress who was on her way to Andhra Pradesh to campaign for a BJP candidate when the aircraft she was in caught fire just after taking off from Bangalore. In her decade long career, Soundarya worked in over 100 films and also produced a film.

A promising Telugu actor Yasho Sagar alias Bharath, whose debut film opposite Sneha Ullal ‘Ullasanga Utsahanga’ was a Tollywood blockbuster of 2008, had a very short-lived career. The young actor in his 20s died in a car accident on December 25, 2012 near Tumkur in Karnataka.

Earlier this year, Malayalam television actor Sarath Kumar was severely injured when his bike collided with a tipper lorry. He was rushed to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, but succumbed on the way.

He was a household name in the region for his roles in serials like ‘Autograph’, ‘Swami Ayyappan’ and ‘Indira’ among others.
