Aamir ‘National icon’ of Election Commission of India

Celebrities all over the world, have definite role cut out for themselves during elections. Some come out into the open to announce their support for the candidates while others try to influence people with their statements. In India the story is quite different. Most celebrities keep their voting a secret affair. Stars here either exercise their vote in silence or take part in the election themselves. But Aamir Khan stands apart from the above mentioned groups.

He is set to becoming the face of Election Commission in a voter awareness campaign that will continue till the end of the election process. Following his initiative to bring about changes in the society with the help of his popular TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’, Aamir will now try to spread awareness on people’s voting rights.

Reportedly, a source close to the actor revealed, “About 15 days ago, Aamir had a meeting with officials from the Election Commission, where they discussed the campaign. It’s a nationwide initiative through which Aamir will tell citizens to practice judicious voting.” The actor will complete shooting for the campaign before the country goes to polls in early April.

According to reports, Aamir will join the league of four other ‘national icons’, such as the Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, boxer MC Mary Kom, badminton ace Saina Nehwal and former president APJ Abdul Kalam.

According to sources, the national icons will reach out to people through such events as systematic voter education and electoral participation (SVEEP), which aims at increasing the voter turnout and to improve the quality of electoral participation in terms of informed and ethical voting.

Reports also say that cricketer Virat Kohli has also been approached by the EC for the same campaign, but it is not confirmed. Big B, in a recent fun campaign for a news channel, was heard telling voters that while actors had the option of retakes they will not, therefore they should choose their candidate carefully.

With Aamir’s Election Commission campaign, it would be another step in the transformation of an actor who began his career as a romantic hero and then slowly changed himself into a solitary star often making his own movies.

Other celebrities such as Salman Khan, Varun Dhawan, Parineeti Chopra, Ranveer Singh have also joined hands with various institutions to create awareness and promote the importance of voting to the masses.
