Aamir Khan’s contract with Snapdeal not to be renewed

After ‘Incredible India’ campaign, Aamir Khan will now formally surrender as the brand ambassador of online retailer Snapdeal, as the merchandise company has decided not to renew the contract with the Bollywood actor.

Aamir Khan was the face of ‘Dil Ki Deal’ ad campaign for the e-commerce firm and his one-year endorsement deal with Snapdeal ends later this month. The contract was extendable by about a year but the e-tailer decided against renewing it, an Economic Times report stated citing sources.

The move has triggered speculations that the decision is the outcome of the actor’s controversial remarks about ‘growing intolerance’ in the country in November last year.

Aamir Khan expressed “alarm” at the rising incidents of violence in the country and said that his wife was worried and suggested leaving the country. His comments sparked protests on the social media and elsewhere, with several politicians and even some of his industry colleagues lashing out at him.

Irate social media users directed their ire at Snapdeal and started campaigns like ‘NoToSnapdeal’ and ‘#BootOutSnapdeal’. They deleted the Snapdeal app from their smartphones and downgraded it on Google Play, demanding Aamir Khan be dropped as the brand ambassador.

At the time, Snapdeal went on record and said, “Snapdeal is neither connected nor plays a role in comments made by Aamir Khan in his personal capacity. Snapdeal is a proud Indian company built by passionate young Indians focused on building an inclusive digital India.” The company even stopped using the actor in its advertisements after the controversy broke out.

This is the second major endorsement loss for Aamir Khan. Last month, the actor’s contract as the brand ambassador of Incredible India campaign was not renewed. Instead, Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra were appointed as the new faces of the flagship campaign.
