2016: Celebrities who got married and marked a new beginning
A lot of celebrity couples may have parted ways in 2016, but fortunately, there have been many other couples who marked a new beginning by tying the celestial knot. As the year comes to an end, let us take a look at the celebrities who exchanged wedding vows this year.
Asin Thottumkal and Rahul Sharma: The Bollywood actress tied the knot with Rahul Sharma, co-founder of mobile phone company Micromax, on January 19, after a courtship of about four years. They got married as per both Christian and Hindu rituals. Asin’s ‘Housefull 2’ and ‘Khiladi 786’ co-star Akshay Kumar, who was instrumental in bringing the couple together, was the best man at the Christian wedding. The couple later threw a grand reception on January 23 in Mumbai, which was attended by Asi’s Bollywood friends and colleagues.
Preity Zinta and Gene Goodenough: The dimpled beauty of Bollywood got married to her American boyfriend Gene Goodenough at a hush-hush ceremony in Los Angeles on February 29. Sussanne Khan and designer Surily Goel were among Preity’s close friends who had attended the wedding. The couple later held a lavish reception in Mumbai on May 13, which was attended by all big-wigs of the film industry.
Urmila Matondkar and Mir Mohsin Akhtar: Urmila married Kashmiri businessman-cum-model Mir Mohsin Akhtar, 10 years younger than he, at a private ceremony on March 3. The couple first met at designer Manish Malhotra’s niece, Riddhi Malhotra’s wedding in 2014. Manish was the only known celebrity at their wedding.
Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover: The ‘Alone’ co-stars, after dating each other for two years, got married on April 30 in a traditional Bengali ceremony at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. It was followed by a lavish reception the same evening, which was attended by celebrities from the world of films, television, as well as fashion. It was a much-hyped wedding.
Amrita Rao and Anmol: The Bollywood actress tied the knot RJ Anmol on May 15, after being in a relationship for seven long years. The couple first met each other when Anmol did an interview with Amrita. Their wedding ceremony was a low-key affair in the presence of the bride and groom’s immediate families and close friends.
Aarya Babbar and Jasmine Puri: The son of veteran actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar married his girlfriend Jasmine Puri on February 22. Aarya dated Jasmine, who works with a production house, for two years. The wedding was a private affair held in a gurudwara in presence of close friends and family members. Aarya’s ‘Bigg Boss 8’ co-contestants Karishma Tanna and Upen Patel were also present at the do.
Sanaya Irani and Mohit Sehgal: The television actors, who met and fell in love on the sets of ‘Miley Jab Hum Tum’, tied the knot on January 25 on the sandy beaches of Uttorda in South Goa. After a relationship of almost eight years, Sanaya and Mohit got engaged in a traditional roka ceremony on December 12, 2015. The beach wedding ceremony was attended by the couple’s family members and friends from the television industry.
Divyanka Tripathi and Vivek Dahiya: The grand wedding of the 'Ye Hai Mohabbatein' actors took place in a traditional ceremony on July 8 in Divyanka’s home town Bhopal. It was followed by another ceremony at groom Vivek’s place in Chandigarh on July 10. The couple also hosted a grand reception on July 14 in Mumbai for their friends from the telly world, who missed their wedding owing to the distance.
Hunar Hale and Mayank Gandhi: Television actors Hunar Hale and Mayank Gandhi were introduced by their respective parents, so their alliance can be called an arranged marriage. The couple tied the knot in a traditional Punjabi ceremony at a gurudwara in Delhi on August 28. A day before, they had a lavish engagement ceremony which was also attended by Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty. All the wedding rituals took place in Delhi.
Sambhavna Seth and Avinash Dwivedi: The Bhojpuri film actress and former ‘Bigg Boss’ contestant tied the knot with her long- time boyfriend Avinash Dwivedi on July 14 at a low-key ceremony in New Delhi. The couple later hosted a reception in Mumbai on July 28, which was attended by Sambhavana’s friends and ‘Bigg Boss’ co-contestants.
Kabir Bedi and Parveen Dusanj: The veteran actor married his long-time partner Parveen Dusanj on January 15, a day prior to his 70th birthday. It was Kabir’s fourth marriage and Parveen is 28 years younger than him. The wedding held in Alibaug was attended by close friends and family.
Irfan Pathan and Safa Baig: The dashing cricketer exchanged vows Jeddah-based model Safa Baig on February 4, at Haram Shareef in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The wedding was a private affair conducted in presence of family members and close friends, followed by a dinner party hosted by the Pathan family at Trident Hotel in Jeddah. Irfan later hosted a reception at his home town in Vadodara on March 8, which was attended by his team mates, friends and other cricketers.
Robin Uthappa and Sheetal Goutham: Cricketer Robin Uthappa tied the knot with his girlfriend, tennis player Sheetal Goutham on March 3. It was an intimate Christian ceremony held in Bengaluru. Pacer Irfan Pathan, who was the groom’s best man, and Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla with husband Jay Mehta, were present at the do.
Babul Supriyo and Rachna Sharma: The singer-turned-politician got married to his girlfriend Rachna, an airhostess, on August 9 in New Delhi’s Ashoka Hotel. It was a grand ceremony held as per to traditional Bengali rituals. The marriage function saw the presence of Prime Minister Narendra and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, among several other bigwigs from the world of politics and music.
