2016 – A year of shocking break-ups in Bollywood
With regard to relationships, the year 2016 started on a bad note. Since the beginning there were several shocking celebrity break-ups, both in Bollywood and television world. While many couples ended their marriages, many others parted ways with their partners. Here’s a look at the couples who called it quits this year.
Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif: One of Bollywood’s charming couples Ranbir and Katrina parted ways earlier this year. Ranbir moved out of the couple’s love nest in Silver Sands on Carter Road, where the duo started living together since November 2014. The two actors, who were in a relationship for seven-long years, never really opened up about the exact reason for their split.
Farhan Akhtar and Adhuna Bhabani: Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and hair stylist Adhuna Babani ended their 16-year-long marriage, and they announced it gracefully by issuing a joint statement. The duo made it clear that they will not let their personal differences come in between their responsibilities as parents to their daughters Akira and Shakya, and will also continue to team up professionally.
Malaika Arora Khan and Arbaaz Khan: The hot couple of Bollywood have decided to end their 17-year-long marriage. The families and friends of both Arbaaz and Malaika have tried to bring a reconciliation between, but in vain. The two have already filed for a divorce at the Bandra family court, and they are expected to be officially divorced by May, 2017.
Rashami Desai and Nandish Sandhu: Television actors Rashmi and Nandish fell in love on the sets of their show ‘Uttran’, and got married in 2012 after a whirlwind romance. But soon, differences cropped up between them and the duo separated for a brief period. They reconciled and decided to give their marriage another chance, but their efforts proved futile. The announced to legally separate in December 2015, and filed for divorce in March this year.
Sushant Singh Rajput and Ankita Lokhande: Sushant and Ankita’s love story began while they were working together for the popular television show ‘Pavitra Rishta’. They were together for over six years and were also living in together. They had even publicly announced to tie the knot in December at the Filmfare Awards preparty in January. But within a few months, the shocking news of their break-up surfaced. Although there were several speculations as to the reason for their split, Sushant revealed that they just “grew apart and it was unfortunate.”
Raghu Ram and Sugandha Garg: It came as a shock when Raghu Ram of ‘Roadies’ fame and his actress wife Sugandha Garg announced their separation and filed for divorce by mutual consent. They were married for 10 years. The ex-couple, who started out as friends before getting married, decided to be in each other’s lives as friends.
Karishma Tanna and Upen Patel: The two actors who fell in love during their stint in reality show ‘Bigg Boss 8’, separated after a relationship of over one year. Upen announced it on Twitter in May by posting, “Me and Karishma have both agreed to part ways. Thank you for all your love.” Karishma also tweeted, “When you find no solution to a problem, it’s probably not a problem to be solved. But rather a truth to be accepted.”
Vivian Dsena and Vahbbiz Dorabjee: Television actor couple Vivian and Vahbbiz got married in 2013 after dating each other for three years. But their marriage hit a rocky patch due to compatibility issues, and the couple separated, or rather ‘took a break’. In an interview, Vivian said they were not divorcing, but were trying to work on their marriage.
Sandip Soparrkar and Jesse Randhawa: Dancer-choreographer Sandip Soparrkar and his wife, model-actress Jesse Randhawa separated and filed for divorce, after six years of marriage. The couple dated for five years before tying the knot in December, 2009. The duo announced their split with a joint statement in which they stated that they would continue to dance together as both of them share the same love for the art.
Om Puri and Nandita: Veteran actor Om Puri and journalist-writer Nandita ended their 26-year-old marriage by opting for judicial separation. Things had turned ugly between them a few years back after Nandita penned the actor’s biography. The court granted the couple judicial separation under which they are a married couple legally, but have their separate lives and cannot interfere in each other’s matter. Om Puri was also given unlimited visitation rights to his son Ishaan.
Himesh Reshammiya and Komal: Singer-composer Himesh Reshammiya and his estranged wife Komal recently filed for divorce by mutual consent. They were married for 22 years and have a son named Swayam. Himesh and Komal have been living separately for some months.
Kamal Haasan and actress Gautami Tadimalla: The veteran Tamil superstar and his long-time partner also parted ways. Gautami herself announced this in an elaborate blogpost in November. They couple has been living together for 13 years. They did not get married as they lacked faith in the institution of marriage.
Soundarya and Ashwin Ramkumar: Tamil megastar Rajinikanth’s younger daughter Soundarya, a filmmaker, filed for divorce from industrialist husband Ashwin. The duo knew each other for four years before getting married in 2010. The couple has been facing trouble in their marital lives for a few years.
