Half Girlfriend

Half Girlfriend’ is a romantic drama starring a fresh pairing of Shraddha Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor. The movie, directed by Mohit Suri, is based on an eponymous novel by Chetan Bhagat, who is co-producing the film with Balaji Motion Pictures. It is slated to release on May 19.

A bevy of composers and lyricists have teamed up for the music album of ‘Half Girlfriend’. The pretty long album, consisting of 10 tracks, has been released under the label of Zee Music Company.

Baarish: It is a melodious track composed by Tanishk Bagchi and opens with beautiful prelude music of santoor. Ash King sounds different as he renders the song in his smooth vocals, along with Shashaa Tirupati who can be heard humming during interludes. Composer Tanishk Bagchi collaborates with Arafat Mehmood to pen the beautiful lyrics.

Thodi Der: This one is a soft romantic track in the sweet vocals of Shreya Ghoshal and Pakistani singer Farhan Saeed, who has also composed the song. It is recreated version of Farhan’s 2014 single ‘Tu Thodi Dair’. A mix of traditional and modern instruments like harmonium and sarangi, and acoustic guitar, have been used in the music. Kumaar has revamped the original lyrics by Asad Chauhan.

Stay A Little Longer: It is basically the English version of ‘Thodi Der’ written and sung by Anushka Shahaney. The song uses a combination of Western and Indian instruments like bass guitar and sarangi. It opens on a dull note, but soon begins to sound good as it progresses and ends with a dramatic orchestration.

Tu Hi Hai: It is a love song composed and sung by Rahul Mishra in qawwali style mixed with rock. The arrangement of tabla and electronic guitar, along with the chorus lends the charm to the song. The lyrics by Laado Suwalka has a hint of a lover’s longing for the beloved.

Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga: It is a slow track with variations in pitch and tune, in the melodious vocals of Arijit Singh, with brief but able support of Shashaa Tirupati. Composer Mithoon has used subtle arrangement with guitar and flute tunes among others. Manoj Muntashir’s lyrics speak of unconditional love.

Pal Bhar (Chaahunga Reprise): This song sung by Arijit Singh and composed by Mithoon is largely similar with its original version. Only the musical arrangement is amplified, and gives a haunting tune in some portions. Manoj Muntashir’s lyrics have retained the hook line.

Half Girlfriend (Love Theme): It is an instrumental version of the song ‘Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga’. Composer Mithoon has arranged it with a variety of instruments, including piano and flute. The theme has a lot of variations and scale-changes that makes it sound nice.

Lost Without You: This one is a peppy song on the lines of pop composed and sung by Ami Mishra, along with Anushka Shahaney. The arrangement is interesting with plenty of guitar and drums with flute and Chinese violin tunes standing out. The lyrics in combination of English and Hindi have been penned by Anushka Shahaney and Kunaal Vermaa.

Mere Dil Main: It is a fun-filled, exciting track that will set one grooving on the dance floor. Composer Rishi Rich has used electronic beats for the arrangement and has also done a rap portion. The mix of Hindi-English lyrics are modern and will strike a chord with today’s youth. The list of lyricists is pretty long with R. Rekhi and Veronica Mehta taking care of the English verses, Yash Anand and Yash Narvekar writing the Hindi words and Ishita Moitra Udhwani adding more lyrics. Veronica Mehta and Yash Narvekar keep alive the liveliness of the song with their rendition.

Mere Dil Main (Dialogue Version): As the title suggests, it is exactly the same song interspersed with a few dialogues by the lead character who hails from Bihar, hence the accent in the dialogues.

Pretty long music album, but all the songs are pleasant to the ears and are consistent.
