Bollywood this year will witness many remakes like Don, Umrao Jaan and Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam among others. Another 70s blockbuster that will join the bandwagon of remakes is the film Kabhi Kabhie. Yash Chopra did the original film and he will be doing the remake as well.
The original star cast consisted of Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. Yash Chopra wants Shahrukh Khan to play Amitabh Bachchan’s role and Akshay Kumar to play Shashi Kapoor’s role. Yash Chopra wanted to make the remake of Kabhi Kabhie with stars of today’s generation for quiet some time. However, it will definitely not be a frame-to-frame remake, the subject will be similar to the earlier one but the treatment and approach will definitely be more contemporary.

Shahrukh Khan was the first choice for Amitabh’s role and Chopra wants to cast Akshay Kumar due to his current box office status. Shahrukh was extremely excited when he heard about the project. He is currently doing another Bachchan remake, Don, but Amitabh’s role in Kabhi Kabhie is definitely a dream role for any actor. This new combination of Shahrukh and Akshay has a fresh appeal and may have a great chemistry.

Yash Chopra has already sent Akshay Kumar feelers for this film. Akshay is currently in Cape Town and will meet and discuss the details with Chopra when he gets back. Yash Chopra also wanted Rani Mukherjee to play the female lead of Rakhee’s role in the film, but due to Rani’s unavailability of dates, they have now approached Preity Zinta for the role.

The story of Kabhi Kabhie is about this young poet, Amit (Amitabh Bachchan) who is in love with the beautiful Pooja (Rakhee). They envisage a perfect future together. Unfortunately, destiny has other plans for them. Pooja’s parents want her to marry Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) and ultimately she relents and abides by her parent’s wishes. Amit in an attempt to forget his love, Pooja, abandons his poetry and marries Anjali (Waheeda Rehman).

The other half of the movie spans the next generation, where Vijay and Pooja’s son Vicky (Rishi Kapoor) falls in love with Anjali’s illegitimate daughter Pinky (Neetu Singh) before her marriage to Amit. This later develops into a triangle where Amit and Anjali’s daughter Sweetie also gets infatuated with Vicky. This is a story of how lovers come together 20 years later as friends, a story of relationships, emotions, betrayal and love.

Kabhi Kabhie, which means ‘sometimes’ is a 1976 film written and directed by Yash Chopra. Khayyam wrote the music, which was immensely popular. Mukesh sang the song Kabhi Kabhie, with a prelude by Amitabh. This song became immensely popular.

Let’s hope that the remake is as successful as the original.
