Water misses the Oscar Award


Deepa Mehta's film 'Water' had been nominated for the Oscars in the Best foreign film category and was pit against five other films.Water is based on the plight of Hindu widows in the holy land of Benares and Deepa had earlier wanted to make her film in India. Unfortunately the film faced several oppositions from various politial factions and hence Deepa had to settle for another destination to make her film.Although the film is based on the life of Indian widows,it was sent as an entry to the Oscars from Canada.The entire cast of Water including actors href=http://www.bollywoodmantra.com/1482_john-abraham-on-water-being-nominated-for-the-oscars.html> John Abraham and Seema Biswas attended the Oscar function in Los Angeles. Unfortunately Water was unable to bag the Oscar award and lost out to Germany's 'The Lives of Others'.
Deepa Mehta has faced many struggles to make her film Water and hence even bein nominated at the oscars is a big achievement for the filmmaker.Though Water has been released in several countries and has been appreciated by many, it has not been released in India yet.However the film is now slated to release on March 9 in India.Nonethless many Indians and those from the Indian film indusry feel proud that 'Water' was nominated for the Oscars but some feel that the themes of Indian films lack international appeal .Noted bollywod filmmaker Karan Johar said "The theme of a film has nothing to do with winning or losing,good films get nominated,great film win.I haven't seen Water but I am sure it's a great film." Filmmaker Shyam Benegal claims "People in the West are not accustomed to our style of making films.I don't believe it has anything to do with subject matter." Hoowever Ravi Chopra who will be distributing Water in India summed up the main feeling saying "By being up there, Water has proved it's worth."

At the Oscars, director Martin Scorsese won four awards,including Best picture and Best director for his film Departed.The Best actor award went to Forest whitaker for 'The Last King of Scotland' and the Best actress award went to Helen Mirren for 'The Queen'.
