Watch: Karan Johar’s acting debut 27 years ago with a TV show
Filmmaker Karan Johar did a full-fledged acting role in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’ last year. Before that he made a brief appearance as Shah Rukh Khan’s friend in the cult film ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ in 1995, which is believed to be his Bollywood debut. But Karan had actually made his acting debut at the age of 16 with a television series aired during 1989.
It was revealed on the new chat show ‘Yaaron Ki Baraat’ on Zee TV where Karan Johar and Farah Khan were the guests. The show hosted by Sajid Khan and Riteish Deshmukh, revealed an old video of an episode from the sci-fi series ‘Indradhanush’ in which Karan played the role of a 16-year-old hefty boy named ‘Srikant’.
The part of old TV series that was screened on the show had Karan’s character crying out aloud, and the ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ director was so embarrassed that he covered his face with his hands. The hosts and the guests – Sajid, Riteish, and Farah and Karan share a great bond in real life as well, and they indulged in leg-pulling Karan while watching the video.
The 44-year-old Dharma Productions chief also revealed that the show was aired two years after it was made, when he was in college at 18, and added that he was also ragged in college for the same.
‘Indradhanush’ was a children’s television series, a mixture of sci-fi and fantasy, that aired on Doordarshan channel. The show was produced and directed by Anand Mahendroo and also featured Akshay Anand, Jitendra Rajpal, Girish Karnad, Vishal Singh among others.

‘Yaaron Ki Baraat’ premiered on Saturday, October 8. While the first episode had veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Shinha as the guests, the second one saw Farah and Karan, who talked about their friendship, life and played interesting games that tested their compatibility.
