Veteran actress Nanda passes away at 75
Popular yesteryear actress Nanda passed away following a massive heart attack on Tuesday. She was 75. She died at her Andheri residence in the morning. "It is shocking as she did not have any history of illness," a relative of hers told PTI on condition of anonymity.
Best known for her stellar performances in films like 'Hum Dono', 'Ittefaq' and 'Gumnaam', Nanda started her filmy journey as a child artist with 'Jaggu' in the 50s. It was paternal uncle-filmmaker V Shantaram who gave child artist Nanda a big break in Bollywood by casting her in 1956 hit movie'Toofan Aur Diya'.
With the success of 'Toofan Aur Diya', there was no looking back for her and delivered hits like 'Jab Jab Phool Khile', 'Gumnaam', 'Teen Deviyan', 'The Train', 'Mandir', 'Angarey', 'Ram Laxman', 'Bandi', 'Ittefaq', 'Hum Dono', 'Prayashchit', 'Ahista Ahista', 'Prem Rog' and 'Mazdoor' among several others. She was one of the reigning actress of 70’s and shared screen space with noted actors like Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman, Rajesh Khanna and Shashi Kapoor.
Nanda was nominated for Filmfare awards five times and she won Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for 'Aanchal'.
Nanda's last rites will be performed at 4 pm at the Oshiwari crematorium.
