Tusshar Kapoor and other celebrity single parents
Parenting is a huge responsibility, but it is a wonderful and fulfilling experience. While a child needs both mother and father, single parenting is also on the rise due to various reasons like divorce, death of a partner, adoption or simply by choice.
Recently, actor Tusshar Kapoor became proud father of a baby boy Laksshya. Tusshar is single and unmarried, but as he said, his paternal instincts have been overpowering his heart and mind. Therefore, he opted for IVF (In vitro fertilisation) and surrogacy to become a single father.
While in the West there are several celebrity single dads like Ricky Martin, Usher, Al Pacino, Collin Farrell and others, Tusshar is probably the first single dad of Bollywood to have a child through IVF and surrogacy.
Before him, choreographer Sandip Soparrkar took up the responsibility of a father while being unmarried. He adopted a child named Arjun as a two-year-old boy in 2007. Sandip later married dancer-cum-model Jesse Randhawa.
Besides the two fathers, there are celebrity single moms who have raised and are raising their kids single-handedly.
Actress and India’s first Miss Universe Sushmita Sen is a single parent of two daughters – Renee and Alisah. The gorgeous and brave lady went against conventions and adopted the kids while being single and aged only 25. She adopted Renee in 2000 and brought home three-month-old Alisah in 2010. Sushmita has never married, but this hasn’t stopped her from experiencing the joy of motherhood.
Actress Raveena Tandon adopted two kids – Pooja and Chayya when they were 11 and eight years old respectively. The girls were daughters of a distant cousin of the actress, who was going through some financial crisis. Raveena was just 21 when she adopted them in 1995 and took care of them as a single mom. After she tied the knot with Anil Thadani in 2004, the couple was blessed with a daughter Rasha and son named Ranbir. Raveena and Anil are now proud parents of four kids.
Former actress-turned-columnist Pooja Bedi has two children daughter Aalia born in 1997 and son Omar born in 2000 from her ex-husband Guetta Ebrahim Furniturewalla whom she married in 1994. Aalia and Omar were barely eight and three years old when their parents divorced in 2003. Ever since, Pooja has raised her kids single handedly. Although she had romantic relationships with Aditya Pancholi, Akashdeep Saigal, choreographer Hanif Hilal, she has never re-married and continues to be a single mom.
Famous artiste Neena Gupta has been a single mom for her daughter Masaba who is now a well-known name in the fashion industry. Although she is now married to a Delhi-based chartered accountant, during the 1980s, she was in a relationship with West Indies cricketer Viv Richards. However, they couldn’t marry as Viv was already married. She took the bold decision to give birth to their love child and raised her single-handedly. Neena was indeed a very brave lady as having a child without marriage was not easy in those days, not even now.
Indian-born Americam model, actress, authot, TV host Padma Lakshmi who was herself raised by a single mom, is a single mother to daughter Krishna Thea Lakshmi-Dell born in February 2010. Padma was married to renowned author Salman Rushdie, but they divorced in 2007. Post divorce, the dusky beauty dated others and Krishna is a love child with ex-boyfriend Adam R. Dell.
Renowned actress of South-Indian cinema and Bharatanatyam dancer Shobhana is also a single mother. She has not married, but adopted a six-month-old girl in 2010 and named her Anantha Narayani.
Television actress Kamya Punjabi and her ex-husband Bunty Negi have a daughter Aara who was born in 2009. The bold actress had opened up about her personal life during her stint in reality show ‘Bigg Boss 7’. She revealed that she and Bunty divorced just a month back before the show in 2013. Ever since, the actress had been a single mother to daughter Aara.
TV actress Urvashi Dholakia, best known for her vamp act as Komolika Basu in Ekta Kapoor’s soap ‘Kasautii Zindagii Kay’ is a single mother of twin boys - Kshitij and Sagar. Urvashi was married when she was just a teenager at 16 years of age, and had her twin a year later. She was divorced a year and a half later, making her a single mom at a young age of 19.
