Some of today’s superstars in Bollywood have come a long way in the industry. These stars entered the industry as small children, as child artists but have risen to bring great fame not only to themselves but also got fame to bow to Bollywood’s advance in the national and international cine industry!
The child artists in years gone by had to sacrifice a lot. They had to forego their studies, and face strenuous working hours, difficult dialogues and exhausting film takes and retakes.
Sarika, well known in the Indian Film Industry, has made a comeback after she stopped acting after marrying Kamal Hassan. She won the National Film Award for best costume design in Hey Ram, and for her role in the film Parzania. She has lately acted in Shoebite, in which she pairs with Amitabh Bachchan. Sarika, better known as Baby Sooraj, acted as a boy in several movies of her childhood. In the sixties, she acted in many children’s movies and in B grade movies.
4. Neetu Singh
Neetu Singh made her appearance as a child artist in the movie Do Kaliyan (1968). In this movie she was introduced as Baby Sonia. She also was a child artist in the film Pavitra Paapi and Waris. As an adult she is famous for her acting in Yaadon ki Baraat, Rafoo Chakkar, Khel Khel Mein and Amar Akbar Anthony.
3. Shashi Kapoor
Shashi Kapoor began his career in the Indian Film Industry as a child artist. He first appeared in the movie Tabdir (1945). He continued as a child artist in thirty more movies. His childhood films also include Aag and Awara. As an adult, he made a name for himself in famous movies of Bollywood like Jab Jab Phool Khile, Deewar, Aamne Saamne and Namak Halaal.
Padmini Kolhapure began her acting career in the Indian films as a child artist in Ishq Ishq Ishq and Ek Khiladi Bawan Pattey. As an adult actress she has acted in famous movies like Saajan Bina Suhagan, Zindagi, Thodi si Bewafai and Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Insaaf ka Tarazoo and Prem Rog amongst many others.
1. Aamir Khan
Aamir Khan’s career in the Indian Film Industry started as a child artist in the Hindi film, Madhosh (1974). He became famous as an adult actor in Yaadon Ki Baraat. He has also acted in Holi, Qayamat se Qayamat tak, Raakh, Raja Hindustani and Laagan. He has won several prestigious awards like the National Film Award (1989), Filmfare Award (1996), Critics Award for best performance in the film Rang De Basanti, Filmfare Award for Best Director for his movie Taare Zameen Par. His Academy Award-nominated movie Lagaan won him the second Best Actor Award. He is now not only a leading superstar but now is al so famous as a director and producer having his own production company. He is considered the most successful of all the child artist of Hindi cinema. For such outstanding contributions from him towards the Indian cinema, the Govt. of India has honored him with Padma Shri (2003) and Padma Bhushan (2010).
It seems an early start in the film industry during their formative years have helped the child actors to learn the tricks of the trade and to go on and achieve the elusive stardom.
