THE HOLLY " BOLLY CONNECTION
Since ages Bollywood stars have been trying to achieve success in the Hollywood industry. Actresses like Malika Sherawat has tried their best but their attempt failed to grab popular attention.
Indian celebs who have achieved success in the west:
Aishwarya Rai Bachhan :
Former Miss World, made the nation proud when she first acted in the English film “ Bride and Prejudice” which was based on the famous novel “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. The film was directed by Gurinder Chada. Next she worked in another English film “Provoked” where she played the role of the victim of domestic violence. Her role was highly praised in this film. Later she could be seen in “ The Pink Panther”. Apart from films, Aishwarya has achieved the International figure of L’oreal Paris and represented India in the Cannes Film festival for last ten years.
After working for radio and as a news reporter for some time, Gurinder Chada began directing documentary films for BBC. She is a British film director from India. Her first documentary, ‘I’m British but...’ was released in the year1989 and her debutant feature film, ‘Bhaji on the Beach’ also won numerous international awards including a BAFTA nomination for “Best British Film of 1994”. After this, she directed “Bend it like Beckham” which was highly praised for its treatment and setting. Her other feature films include, “Bride and Prejudice”, “The Mistress of Spices” and “It’s a Wonderful Afterlife”.
A.R. Rahman :
The renowned music director, scored music for famous English films like, Shekhar Kapur’s ‘Elizabeth: The Second Age’ followed by other films like, ‘Inside Man’, ‘Lord of War’, ‘The Accidental Husband’, etc. In the year 2008 he even directed music for the Hollywood film ‘Couples Retreat’. He won the BML London Award for this film as the Best Music Director. Later in 2008 he achieved the prestigious Academy Awards for the film “Slumdog Millionaire”. Recently he has composed for “127 Hrs” in 2010 a film by Danny Boyle
The “Slumdog Millionaire” fame Freida Pinto has successfully worked in television shows. She won awards and appreciation for her performance. Next she acted in ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’, with Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Anupam Kher and Naomi Watts. She could be also seen in the upcoming film ‘Immortals’.
Deepa Mehta :
Indian born Canadian film director begun her career in the year 1991 with Sam & Me. It won the Honorable recognition in the Camera d’Or category at Cannes Film Festival in the same year. Later she directed other Holly –Bolly films like,
Camilla, Fire, Earth, Water, and Bollywood/Hollywood in 2002 for which she won the prestigious Genie Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Today other actors like Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher etc are trying hard to take Indian acting to the next level. Hope to see some good work in the forth coming English films.
