 Dharmendra was at the centre of attention on Saturday. The BJP, however, was none too pleased with his performance.
When the actor's attention was drawn towards the case filed against him and his wife Hema Malini in Indore by a couple of Congressmen, he lost his cool...
"These people are not fit to be part of a democratic process," said an angry Dharmendra, referring to the petition filed with the EC, seeking the cancellation of his nomination from Bikaner for not disclosing his wife’s name in his affidavit. "They need dictatorship. A dictator will teach them the basic etiquette that democracy requires."
"This country does not deserve democracy... I pray to the Almighty to give me five years of dictatorship and I will make this country a better place to live in. These people would then come, begging for democracy and then I might grant them."
Needless to say, the BJP was left scurrying for cover. Sources said after a TV channel telecast Dharmendra's angry outburst, party seniors rang in with damage-control instructions. The actor was told not to speak "beyond what has been taught in Venkaiah Naidu's class".
The results were visible within a few hours. Later in the day, Dharmendra was more than willing to eat his words. "I was very angry, so I blurted out a few things which I do not honestly believe in," he said. "Basically I love democracy. There is no question of seeking any kind of dictatorship. All I meant was that I will take these people to task though legal means."
PTI adds that in a statement in Delhi the actor said he was feeling uneasy about joining politics and may have missed something when reading the nomination form. "I saw columns for my name, my wife's name, property. I thought I had filled Parkash's name as per the Hindu Marriage Act."
He was also quoted as having said, "I am not such a cheap person that I will change my religion for selfish reasons."
