State govt not received letter for Sanjay's jail term reduction

Maharashtra Home Minister said that he had not received any proposal from the central government for considering of deduction of jail tenure of actor Sanjay Dutt.

It was reported earlier that the Home Minister of Maharashtra, R R Patil had received a proposal from the central Government asking the state Government to consider the reduction in the jail tenure of actor Sanjay Dutt and two other convicts on humanitarian grounds. One of the convicts is a 70 year old woman. However, RR Patil quashed all the speculations and said that his state Government has not received any such letter from the Central Government.

Patil also said that even Sanjay Dutt’s sister and Congress MP from Mumbai, Priya Dutt has not made any request for the reduction of sentence of her brother.

R R Patil made a statement in Maharashtra Legislative Council. He made the statement in response to the Bharatiya Janata Party member and leader of the opposition, Vinod Tawade. Vinod Tawade opposed the grant of bail or reduction of sentence term for the actor.

According to Tawade, any such action by the Government will send wrong signals to the society. He told that criminals and convicts must never be pardoned as it will encourage other convicts to put a pressure on the Government.

Sanjay Dutt is sentenced for a period of 42 months in Pune Yerwada Jail in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blast case. Sanjay Dutt was found guilty of possessing illegal arms like AK 56 which was a part of the consignment received for the serial blast of 1993.

Currently, Sanjay Dutt is out of the jail on parole on medical grounds till October 28th. Parole is granted to the convicts considering a number of factors. Good conduct of the convicts is one of the major criteria of granting a parole. Parole is granted from the accumulated leave of the convict.

Sanjay Dutt has been facing health issue in the jail. He wanted to do strenuous job which will allow him some good amount of physical activity. But citing his security concerns, he was not granted such jobs. Rather he is given the task of paper bag making. Everyday Sanjay makes paper bags which get sold out through an NGO. He even gets a daily wage for the jobs performed by him. Sanjay Dutt is reported to fully co-operate with the jail officials.
