SRK, Amitabh, Jaya light up Kolkata International Film Festival
19th Kolkata International Film Festival has started from 10th November and film celebrities from all parts of the country have reached Kolkata.
The international film festival will take place from 10th November to 17th November in Kolkata. The function kick started after paying tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema and was hosted by renowned actors Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Hassan. The function saw a huge gathering of celebrities and actors from Bollywood and Tollywood.
The Chief Minister of Bengal, Mamta Banerjee said that from next edition, the festival will be competitive in nature. She said, “We are going to make the festival a competitive one in which the best of the films from Hollywood, Bollywood and Tollywood will be invited.”
The inaugural event took place at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata. Amitabh Bachchan reached the International airport but was taken to the exit from an abandoned door as there was huge crowd at the airport. But the gracious Amitabh Bachchan did oblige the shutterbugs and waived at them before entering his car. His wife and actress Jaya Bachchan had accompanied him.
Shahrukh Khan, who is the state ambassador, was also present in Kolkata for this event. He tweeted, “I love you Kkkkolkata...feel always happy going to my city. Looking forward to the festival and just the air of joy that hits u as u land (Sic).”
A number of other stars like Aparna Sen, Konkona Sen Sharma, Mithun Chakraborty and Prasenjit Chatterjee among others were seen at the inaugural function. Stalwarts’ from the world of fashion, politics and sports were also present at the function.
Amitabh Bachchan emphasized the importance of Bangla literature in Indian cinema. He said that cinema got people together. He said, “People irrespective of caste and creed rejoice at a scene of happiness and cry during a scene of sorrow. Thus it creates a bond among people.” He mesmerized audience by including Bengali words and phrases in his speech. He said, “Koto purono Katha mone pore jai (I remember so many old stories).” He began his career by working as an executive in a company in Kolkata and later got a big break in Bollywood.
Shahrukh Khan and Kamal Hassan also spoke on the occasion. In a span of 7 days, in 13 venues, 189 movies will be screened. The movies will be from Bollywood, Tollywood and other foreign languages.
