Sonam Kapoor to play brave-heart flight attendant Neerja Bhanot

According to the latest grapevine, Sonam Kapoor has been signed in to play brave heart flight attendant Neerja Bhanot in a biopic. 23-year-old Neerja saved many lives during the 1986 hijacking of an American airliner in Karachi.

The film will be directed by Ram Madhwani and is written by Saiwyn Quadras of ‘Mary Kom’ fame. Brave heart Neerja joined the airlines after her marriage ended. She was only married for a year when she fell victim of dowry. She was the chief flight purser on the unfortunate Pan Am flight 73 airline that was hijacked by four terrorists on September 5, 1986, when it landed in Karachi.

While the three-member American cockpit crew managed to escape, Neerja saved many lives but lost her own lives after she decided to take control of the situation. She hid the passengers’ passports so that the hijackers could not differentiate between American and non-American citizens, but was killed while defending three children from bullets fired by the terrorists. Twenty passengers were killed and 100 others injured in the incident.

Neerja was awarded the Ashoka Chakra posthumously. She was the youngest civilian in the country to be bestowed with the honour.
