Shilpa Shetty bets Rs.1 Lakh in IPL 6

According to Delhi Police, actress and co-owner of IPL team ‘Rajasthan Royals’, Shilpa Shetty had placed a bet of Rs.1 lakh in the season 6 of Indian Premium League (IPL). Delhi police also rejected the claim of Shilpa Shetty’s husband and co-owner of Rajasthan Royals, Raj Kundra that he had lost Rs. 1 crore in IPL matches.

Both Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra denied the charges against them. The actress tweeted, "For those who care, my apparent involvement in betting is complete nonsense and I have never bet on any cricket match ever. Truth will prevail." She further added, "We love cricket, it's the passion for the sport that made us a part of IPL. It's extremely disheartening to keep clarifying that."

It was Ahmedabad-based industrialist Umesh Goenka and business partner Kundra, who spilled the beans on Shilpa Shetty by revealing her betting involvement. Goenka is also the bookie for Kundra. He was questioned by the investigators of IPL spot-fixing scandal.

Meanwhile Kundra was also questioned by the investigators in which he claimed to have lost Rs 50 lakh in betting during IPL 4 season, Rs 40 lakh in IPL 5 and Rs 12.5 lakh in the IPL 6. The senior Police Officer dumped his claims and said, "We do not buy this argument. He had told us that he placed bets on matches played by Rajasthan Royals. In this season, his team won 11 out of the 16 matches it played and it is hard to believe that he lost money in betting."

However, Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said, "Raj Kundra remains ‘very much’ part of the investigation but he was ‘not the focus’ of their probe as there is no evidence as of now to suggest that he was into spot-fixing’’.

When asked about Delhi Police not summoning Gambling Act like its Mumbai counterpart who charged Gurunath Meiyappan and Vindoo Dara Singh, Kumar said they do not have adequate supporting evidence to arrest Kundra. "We don't have supporting material evidence. I do not know the details of Mumbai Police's investigations. So I cannot comment on them. But we will go after somebody only if we have material evidence to back our investigations," the Police Commissioner said.

He also added that the investigators need to dig further in order to prove the allegations against Shilpa Shetty. He said, "We are yet to decide on Shilpa. We always keep our options open. Ours is not a short term investigation which are going to close in the next two or three days. It's going to take time. Let us see how things unfold."
