The seventh edition of the Indian Premiere League (IPL), perhaps India’s most popular sporting event, is now over. The tournament ended in a spectacular fashion, thanks to a thrilling final match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab. It was KKR who came out on top and won its second IPL title. The final was held at a jam packed M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore and almost the whole country was glued to the television. Social networking sites were flooded with posts and comments regarding the game. Once again the passion of the cricket crazy nation was on full display. There were multiple memorable performances in the match from both teams. Apart from the players, the star owners of both the teams, Preity Zinta and Shahrukh Khan were also in full form. Cheering their respective teams from the galleries and moving the crowd.
The knights won the toss and put Punjab to bat. Punjab did not have a good start and after six overs were struggling at 30 runs for 2 wickets. Virender Sehwag made only 7 from 10 balls and captain George Bailey was bowled by Sunil Narine for only 1 run. From there the pair of wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha and opener Manan Vohra stabilized the Punjab innings. Vohra played very well and scored 67 runs from 52 balls with help of two sixes and six fours. On the other hand, Saha was absolutely brilliant. He scored his maiden IPL hundred. His stunning 55 balls and 115 runs innings featured eight sixes and ten fours. Among the KKR bowlers, spinner Shakib Al Hasan was the least expensive with the figures of 4-0-26-0. Punjab finished at 199 for 4 wickets after 20 overs.
Just like Punjab the Knights also had a modest start. Robin Uthappa (4 runs) and Gautam Gambhir (23 runs) got out early. Manish Pandey with his knock of 94 runs was the match winner. He kept his nerves and scored runs when necessary. He was supported for a while by Yusuf Pathan (36 off 22 balls). After Pathan there was a string of quick wickets, Shakib Al Hasan, Ryan ten Doeschate, Suryakumar Yadav and Manoj Pandey. But Piyush Chawla held on and scored the final runs to guide his team to a hard earned victory. Among Punjab bowlers Karanveer Singh picked up four wickets but it was Akshar Patel who was the most economical bowler. Manish Pandey was declared the Man of the Match.
