Saifai Mahotsav: Shahrukh Khan backs rival Salman Khan

The small village of Saifai is in the national headlines. As much for the ‘Saifai Mahotsav’ organized over there and equally for the criticism surrounding the event. A pompous two week long fair is held in the Saifai village spending crores of rupees from the public coffer by the UP government. All the glitterati from the tinsel town of Bollywood are flown to the remote location in charted flights to perform at the event. Under mounting criticism from all quarters, the state government has hidden the information about how much the stars were paid to perform at the event.

Incidentally Saifai is the ancestral village of young CM of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav and Samajwadi party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. They are known for their liking of Hindi film industry. Madhuri must be nodding in agreement as the CM Akilesh Yadav on Wednesday announced to give rupees one crore each to her film ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ and ‘Bullet Raja’ to show his gratitude towards the performing actors. It was stated that the gift is showered on the films as they were majorly shot in locations of UP.

However, though crores of rupees were spent on the entertaining fair, much was left wanted in the inadequate refugee camps for the riot victims of Muzaffarnagar. Even the UP government has stated the demise of 34 children in the camps due to cold.

The Saifai fair was attended by Bollywood stars Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt and Ranvir Singh. Questions were raised by the media whether the film stars fulfilled their social responsibility by attending such an event. Shahrukh Khan decided to support his colleagues on the issue and stated, "I'll just say two thing about this. One, I will not take a moral high ground and comment on the reasons of my colleagues working or taking on a job. I think it extremely unfair. We don't know the details as to why they have taken it or why they have done it, should they have done it. I can't take a moral high ground, I'm a performer myself. At times I've gone ahead and performed not even realizing that there are issues surrounding the area I'm performing in."

However, Shahrukh declined to comment whether he would have visited Saifai if he was invited. Naturally so, as he is not part of the controversy and doesn’t have any intention to be.
