Salman Khan likely to go behind the bars for 10 yrs

After 11 years of court case, Salman Khan was finally charged in the 2002 hit and run case on Wednesday. A sessions court charged him with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The actor can face an imprisonment up to 10 years.

Salman was charged under section 304(2) of the IPC which maintains a jail term up to 10 years. Besides this, he was also charged under sections 279 (negligent driving leading to death), 337 (causing hurt or minor injury), 427 (causing damage of property), Bombay Prohibition Act and Motor Vehicles Act.

Salman Khan pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the above charges after the magistrate U B Hejib read out the charges. Salman then submitted an application with the court requesting court to grant him exemption from making personal appearances in the court for his trials. Court agreed but has asked him to make an appearance whenever he would be summoned by the court.

Salman Khan appeared in the court on Wednesday in a grey full sleeved shirt and a pair of black trousers. His sisters, Alvira and Arpita were also present.

Earlier, Salman Khan was tried for lesser charges of negligent and rash driving. Under charges of rash driving, he would have got a punishment term of just two years. However, Public Prosecutor and an NGO appealed that the actor should be charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The case goes back to September 28th, 2002. At late night, Salman’s Toyota Land Cruiser was in a high speed and drove over people sleeping on the footpath in Bandra. One person died and four got severely injured. Salman fled from the spot and appeared eight hours later to surrender in a police station.  A hit and run case was initially registered against him.

Medical report later came out and it was found that Salman was under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place. Salman, however told that it was his police bodyguard who was driving the vehicle. His bodyguard initially spoke in favor of the actor but many years later he changed his statement. Under mysterious circumstances, he died later.

A number of witnesses were called in court and they all claimed that it was Salman who was driving the vehicle. After this, he was framed with severe charges.

On Wednesday, in court, Public Prosecutor pleaded that the case was getting dragged for 11 years and the charges should be framed immediately as the actor was supposed to go abroad for 2 months in connection to his shootings. It was only then that the magistrate read out the charges.
