Rani Mukherjee launches ‘Mardaani’ trailer in style

After appearing with Aamir Khan in ‘Talaash’, Rani Mukerji will be making her on screen comeback after 2 years with the hard-hitting crime thriller ‘Mardaani’. This is her first film after tying the knot with producer Aditya Chopra. The film is produced under the banner of Yashraj Films, which makes it Rani’s home production.

The trailer of the film was released on 24th June and already it has become a talking point. Rani plays a hardened Mumbai Crime Branch police officer and introduces herself in the trailer as “Shivani Shivaji Roy, crime branch Mumbai, senior inspector.” The trailer is quite impactful and it is vastly different from the typical YRF productions. This is different too for Rani Mukerji who is mostly known for her performances in romantic, emotional roles. Her character is said to be inspired by a real life women police officer.

From the trailer it is learnt that the film deals with the sensitive subject of Child sex trafficking. Rani’s character will be seen fighting a young but dangerous crime boss in order to rescue a girl close to her. Rani will be seen doing full scale action in this film. She wears a minimal look befitting a police officer and chases and fights fiercely. To prepare for this role Rani met the Mumbai Police Crime Branch Chief Himanshu Roy last year. But she refused to give any details about the project at that time.

After the hour long meeting, Roy had said to the media, Rani is playing the role of a crime branch officer in her upcoming film ‘Mardaani’. She wants to understand how a crime branch officer functions, ways in which officer probes various cases, officer’s body language and lifestyle among others so that she could get accustomed to the officer’s conduct…“She sought to understand the work schedules of an officer and dangers being faced during a police operation, etc. She was very keen to know various aspects of an officer’s life.” Rani has always been known as a hardworking actor and will likely bring her best in this unique role.

Actor Jisshu Sengupta will be seen playing the role of Rani’s husband. The film has been written by Gopi Puthran and will be directed by Pradeep Sarkar of 'Parineeta' fame. Sarkar also directed Rani in another YRF production ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’ in 2007. The production house is very serious about the project and made the people associated with the film sign non-disclosure agreements. The film is slated for a August 22nd release.
