Rajkummar Rao, Hansal Mehta win National Award for ‘Shahid’

The 61st National Award ceremony came to an end on Wednesday, April 16, with the announcement of the winners. Hindi movie ‘Shahid’, based on the life of human rights lawyer Shahid Azmi, won the best actor award for actor Rajkummar Rao and the best director award for Hansal Mehta.

Director Mehta reportedly said, “It is a wonderful feeling. It is a tribute to Shahid Azmi. It is just his karma which has worked for the film and for us. It’s also a tribute to my team who stood by me for three and a half years while making this film.”

But actor Rajkummar Rao’s phone has not stopped ringing ever since the announcement of the awards on Wednesday evening.

And according to reports, the young and talented actor said it was the most important day of his life.

Rajkumar was quoted by a news agency in Mumbai saying, “It feels great! It is the most important day of my life. I was not expecting this at all, but when I got to know about it, my heartbeat slowed down.”

Earlier, he had won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for his role of Shahid Azmi in ‘Shahid’ as well.

After graduating from Film and Television Institute of India, Rajkumar spent a year visiting studios and meeting directors and got his first break when he was cast in the 2010 unconventional film ‘Love Sex aur Dhokha’.

Then he was signed for Ekta Kapoor’s ‘Ragini MMS’ where he played a negative role. Both ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’ and ‘Ragini MMS’ were hit movies, and Rajkumar’s performances in both films were appreciated. He also starred in Bejoy Nambiar’s ‘Shaitan’.

In 2012, Rajkumar acted in a series of small, but significant roles in such films as ‘Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2’, ‘Chittagong’ and ‘Talaash’.

Anurag Kashyap selected Rajkumar for ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’, after watching his performance in ‘Love Sex aur Dhokha’.

Before portraying the role of Shamshad Alam, Rajkumar visited Wasseypur to make his character and accent more authentic. In the critically acclaimed ‘Chittagong’, he played the role of freedom fighter, Lokenath Bal and in ‘Talaash’, he portrayed the role of a junior officer to Aamir Khan’s character.

The talented star’s success continued with the drama film ‘Kai Po Che!’ in 2013, which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor nomination.

In 2014, Rajkumar played the leading man in the blockbuster ‘Queen’.
