‘Race 2’ collects 51.35 crore in the first weekend
Released on 18th January, 2013 Abbas-Mustan latest action thriller ‘Race 2’ earns Rs 51.35 crore in the opening weekend. It was the first biggest release of 2013 and the movie is a sequel to 2008 blockbuster ‘Race’. At some cities, the movie opened to houseful while in some other most of the seats was vacant.The movie received mixed reviews from critics and average response from audience.
It opened with Rs 15.12 crore on Friday and immediately showed a hike of Rs 20.72 crore on Saturday being a national holiday. The collection again went down on Sunday and collected only Rs 15.51 crore. Overall, during its first weekend, the film earned only Rs 51.35 crore.
“We are extremely happy with the three day weekend of Race 2, it’s the second biggest weekend collections of all times for a three day period and the first film in 2013 to do so. We always knew the sequel to the hit Race (2008) will be liked by the audiences and the numbers are proving just the same at the box office. The film has performed exceptionally well in North and South India beating all box office collection benchmarks,” Gaurav Verma, Director - India Theatrical Distribution, Studios, Disney UTV said.
The overseas collection was also not promising, it has collected Rs 18.9 crore ($3.25 million). It made $1 million in Gulf, close to $1 Million in USA and UK.
“Race 2 has seen an incredible response by audience across international markets. People have braved the weather conditions in UK and on the East Coast in the US and come to watch the movie in theatres. The box office in markets like Australia, UK, North America has seen a significant jump on Saturday/ Sunday,” said Amrita Pandey, Executive Director - Syndication, International Distribution & Disney Media Distribution, Studios, Disney UTV.
