Promotional Video for Omkara
After promoting his film Omkara at Cannes this year, Vishal Bharadwaj has opted for another promotional strategy this time. Lately many filmmakers have been opting to do a promotional video for their film. This is generally done to enhance the appeal of the film. Director Vishal Bharadwaj too has decided to shoot a promotional video for his film Omkara which is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello. The film stars Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, Bipasha Basu and Naseeruddin Shah. The title song of Omkara will be remixed for the promotional video and it will be shot on Ajay Devgan.
Vishal has asked Astad Deboo, a world-renowned dance choreographer who is also familiar with various dance forms like Kathak and other classical dance forms to choreograph the promotional song for Omkara. Although Astad Deboo is well-known outside India but in bollywood the artist has only worked on two films prior to Vishal’s film Omkara. Astad has also won the Sangeet Natak Academy Award which is one of the highest honours bestowed on a creative artist by the government. Vishal hopes that after seeing his video, many more in bollywood will know of the talents of this world class performer. Astad has cut short his tour to Spain just to choreograph Vishal’s song. Says Vishal “Astad was in Spain when I spoke with him. I sent a CD of the song to him and for the next few weeks we were in touch through phone and email and were deciding how to work on the song.”
Apart from AjayDevgan, the song has Manipuri dancers performing a type of Martial Arts. Astad elaborates on the dance form “This dance form is called Thang Ta and the drummers are called Pung Cholam. It’s a traditional form of martial arts from Manipur.” Astad is quite familiar with Shakespeare’s works. He has choreographed several interpretations of the play. Vishal was very persistent and only wanted Astad to choreograph his song. Vishal claims “I didn’t want a regular music video for this song. I wanted something unusual and I knew Astad would work wonders with his imagination. It’s very aesthetically rooted and will definitely add value to the film.”
On the sets of Omkara however director Raj Kumar Santoshi was also present to film a sequence for his upcoming film Halla Bol which is a social drama. Raj Kumar Santoshi says “I’m shooting a film within a film. Ajay plays an actor, a superstar in my next film, Halla Bol. So I am shooting the daily routine of a filmstar, the way he interacts with others and acts on the sets.”
