Priyanka's 'Mary Kom' facing ban in Manipur
While the entire nation is eagerly awaiting to catch a glimpse of mighty Priyanka pack some punch on-screen, it is rumoured that ‘Mary Kom’ is unlikely to release in the fiery boxer`s home state, Manipur. According to reports, the movie which is a tribute to Mary Kom will not be screened in Manipur because the state is witnessing a ban on Hindi movies and Hindi TV shows since 2000. In fact, thousands of video cassettes of Hindi films were also confiscated during raids.
Hindi films are reportedly not screened in Manipur due to threats by some militant outfits. The ban has been imposed by separatist group ‘Revolutionary Peoples Front’, who wish to make Manipur an independent socialist state. Makers of ‘Mary Kom’, based on boxer M.C. Mary Kom's life, have said that they will try their best to release the movie in Manipur, the Olympic bronze medalist’s home state, where Hindi films are not shown since a few years. The makers of the film are learnt to have been in touch with the state government. But, so far, there has been no official word on the matter. Calls made to Manipur chief secretary PC Lawmkunga's mobile went unattended.
"We are planning to screen it in Manipur. So, we are in touch with the Manipur government," Neerav Tomar, chief executive officer and managing director of IOS Sports and Entertainment stated.
But the saga doesn’t end here. Apparently, this is not the only hurdle that the film is likely to face. There’s another! The Manipuris are not too happy with Pee Cee depicting the boxer on screen. Apparently, they wanted a North-Easterner to step into the shoes of MC Mary Kom.
The uncertainty on the screening of the movie in Manipur has saddened Mary and her family among others. "I will feel bad if the movie is not released in my state," Mary said. Her husband, Onler Kom, expressed a similar sentiment. "We will be very sad if it is not screened in Manipur. One must understand that the film is about Mary's life, family etc," he said.
Directed by Omung Kumar, the movie also stars Darshan Kumar, who is playing Priyanka`s better-half in the film. The movie is set to release on 5th September.
Will Mary Kom's home state get to watch the film? Only time
will tell us! We certainly hope that Mary’s state embraces the movie and hail
their true hero.
