Sanjay Leela has asked Priyanka to take two months to prepare her herself for the role of Mary Kom. Bhansali said , "Priyanka has to take a break and work out to get back into previous. She will have a boxing trainer and a personal trainer. She has to start feeling like a boxer once again."
It was earlier rumored that Bhansali was unhappy with the first rushes of the movie. So he had put a break on the filming of the movie. When contacted, Bhansali said, “Not true. The reason for the delay is the fact that we are focusing on the release of 'Ram Leela'. Mary Kom will resume shooting in February-March as it is difficult to shoot in Manali now.”
Priyanka went to meet Mary Kom before she started filming for this movie. Mary Kom was happy that Priyanka Chopra was playing her role. She said, “I am happy a superstar like Priyanka is playing the role. But I think the superstar will also be inspired.”
Mary Kom has allowed cinematic liberties in the biopic. She said, “I have checked the script before the movie but there will be masala in it. Even after we win there is masti. What's movie without masala.”
Priyanka also confirmed the script and said, “Well, first of all Mary Kom film is not a biopic. It is not a docudrama, it is a feature film. Of course the film is about Mary Kom's life but then we have built a cinematic world around it. We have just done our schedule and it has turned out to be fantastic.”
Deepika later revealed that she also wanted to play Mary’s role. She said, “I would have loved to do a biopic on Mary Kom, but now Priyanka is doing it. I feel she is right for the film. I am glad a film on Mary Kom is being made. People have started recognizing her. At least her achievements will not go waste.”
