Priyanka Chopra avoids clash with ex-flame Shahid Kapoor
Priyanka Chopra’s biopic film on Olympic medal winning boxer Mary Kom may have a release date change. In April, the production house Viacom18 Motion Pictures announced that the film will be released on 2nd October 2014. But as per latest reports, the release may be brought forward to last week of September. This change will help Priyanka’s film avoid box office clashes with good friend Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Bang Bang’ and ‘Haider’ that stars Priyanka’s rumored ex boyfriend Shahid Kapoor.
A crew member of the film who refused to be named, said, “The film was all set to release on October 2. But the film’s unit is currently working on its post production and we expect to complete it soon. Keeping this in mind, we have decided to release it early. This means that it will no longer clash with Shahid Kapoor’s Haider and Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang.” Box office clashes are not good for business.
Trade analysts have said that if too many big films get released on the same day, none can profit as per their potential. October 2nd is Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday. This year’s 2nd October is on Thursday which means the films will be able to get a long weekend. Naturally, every producer will want to release their films during that time. This can divide the movie going audience and cause loss to the films. The change of release date of Priyanka’s film will give it necessary space before other big films are released. A trade analyst has commented, “But if producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali and director Omung Kumar are thinking of bringing forward the release, it would be a good move.” However there is still no official statement from the producer.
The Mary Kom biopic is yet to receive a formal title. The film is being produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali while Omung Kumar will handle the director’s responsibilities. The film will be released in Hindi as well as in English to capitalize on Priyanka’s international recognition as a singer. Priyanka went through extensive physical training to play a boxer. She also visited Mary’s hometown Manipur to learn extensively about the boxer’s life and struggles.
Mary Kom has stated, "When she came to Manipur, she knew about boxing so I gave her tips as a mother and a wife, how I went about managing my home and profession, how I live with my family — basically she got to know aspects about my family life." Let us wait and see whether Priyanka’s star power and Mary Kom’s inspirational story becomes a winning combination on screen or not.
