Politics & Bollywood
Nowadays a very common and popular trend that is visible is the involvement of the Bollywood actors in politics. They are mostly seen during the elections, which is a brilliant way to fetch more votes from the fans of the respective actors. However, here is the account of some Bollywood stars who have tried their luck in politics as well.
The Shahenshah of Bollywood made an entry into the politics in 1984. He was up close and personal with the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. Amitabh even won Lok Sabha election from Allahabad. But unfortunately he could not make it big in politics, and his tenure in political office was very short. His sudden entry in political scenario even started hampering his career in Bollywood. Thus Big B declared that politics was never his cup of tea and that he had never understood it, and stood apart.
Jaya Bachchan, unlike his husband seemed to understand politics quite well. She was an active politician of the popular Samajwadi Party. She has represented the Rajya Sabha being an honourable member of the Parliament. But controversies have also troubled her in politics. During the time of shri APJ Abdul Kalam, the Election Commission put forth a report that requested disqualification of the Bachchan’s wife from the Rajya Sabha, where she held a post of profit. But, no immediate decisions followed the recommendations of the commission. Jaya Bachchan is determined never to quit politics. She understands the tricks of the Indian politics quite well.
The macho hunk of Bollywood who has always been in limelight for being in controversies has also been jailed for quite long time. He also was selected by Samajwadi party in the year 2009 as a contestant for Lok Sabha election. The party relied much on Sanjay Dutt, and had high hopes that he would bag the majority votes. This was mainly because he was the man who played the character of a Good Samaritan with compassionate behaviour. He always played a character who helped the people who needed it. Despite his desire to contest the elections he was made to wait as he had a case running in the court at that time. Hence it was only his background which did not favour his wish to become a politician.
The well known and beautiful actress of Bollywood, Jayaprada, contested the Lok Sabha elections from Rampur. She was nominated as a candidate in the year two thousand twelve from Samajwadi Party and won as well. But post election not much was heard from her about relevant political issues. Hence she might have been just a public face, where she won the election but all the decisions were taken by the party itself. Well doesn’t that mean that she was merely a puppet?
Smriti Irani who won the hearts of many television viewers via her famous character Tulsi, also attempted a career in politics. She joined the BJP and even stood as a candidate in the election, and won it as well. But later on nothing much was heard about her political activities.
Govinda, the comedy hero of Bollywood also won the election but emerged as a weak politician. These days his career in Bollywood is also almost stalled. He joined the ruling Congress Party and made an entry in Indian Politics. Even though he won the election and got a seat in the Indian Parliament, his stint in his office was nothing worthwhile to mention.
Well, though these faces have lasted for very short time in the political arena; that does not mean that the trend would stop!
