Police clueless about Varsha Bhosle’s death
The last rites of Varsha Bhosle, daughter of legendary singer Asha Bhosle was done today. But it seems the police are still clueless, if it is a case of suicide or a murder. It is assumed that Varsha had committed suicide at the Peddar Road residence, which she shared with her mother.
A police officer investigating the case said that the family members haven’t been questioned yet, as they are still in a state of shock. No suicide note has been found. The gun that was used was a Belgian made baby browning .22 pistol. The police think the incident took place on Sunday night. However the neighbors didn’t hear any gunshot. The police officer also said that the gun is not easy to handle. It requires some training to load the gun.
She had shot herself twice in the temple. The door of the flat was locked from inside. After several calls from the maid servant Deepali Mane went unanswered, she went to Asha’s driver. He managed to enter the flat from the adjacent flat of Varsha’s aunt Lata Mangeshkar. There he found the blood soaked body of Varsha lying on the sofa.
Varsha was one of the three children’s of Asha and Ganpatrao Bhosle. Asha had eloped with Ganpatrao at the age of 16. Varsha had worked as a freelance writer. She had been a columnist for web portal Rediff.com, from 1997 to 2003 and the Sunday Observer from 1994 – 1998. And the Gentleman magazine in 1993, along with other web portals.
She had tried her hand at singing. She was a playback singer for some Hindi and Bhojpuri songs. She had earlier tried to commit suicide also. In 1998, Varsha attempted suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills .She again tried to do the same in 2008.It was a day after Asha's 75th birthday, by taking sleeping pills. She was immediately rushed to Jaslok hospital and her life was saved at that time.
Varsha had married a sports writer and public relations professional Hemant Kenkre but the two got divorced in 1998. She was close to ace fashion photographer Gautam Rajadakshya, who passed away last year. It seems she had gone into severe depression after that.
Another possible reason for her suicide can be that none of the second generation Mangeshkar’s could make it big. She might have been too much affected by that.
