Om Shanti Om versus Saawariya this Diwali
Diwali day will see two of the most anticipated big films of the year. Biggest superstar of the country Shahrukh and director Farah’s Om Shanti Om and one of bollywood’s best directors Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya will be releasing on the same day. While both sides OSO and Saawariya members maintain that both the films should do well, there is no doubt an underlying nervousness and anxiousness about the other person’s film getting a better response at the box-office. So will it be OSO or Saawariya that does better at the box-office, time will tell.
Om Shanti Om has been produced by Shahrukh’s banner and directed by his good friend Farah Khan. This is SRK and Farah’s second film together after Main Hoon Na which was a hit. The film also stars Shahrukh Khan, newcomer Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade etc. There are many highlights such as Shahrukh’s newly acquired six pack abs , the presence of 30 veteran and contemporary stars like Salman, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Jeetendra, Mithun etc together in one song etc which will surely make the audience even more excited to view the film. The music of OSO has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar and it has received extremely good reviews and feedback. Farah Khan’s film OSO is a complete commercial masala potboiler with a tribute to bollywood in the 70’s. SRK and even newcomer Deepika have gone all out to promote Om Shanti Om by appearing on several reality shows etc. The response to OSO is tremendous as the advance bookings for the film are almost full.
On the competition to her film from Saawariya, Farah stated “There is no tension between Sanjay Leela Bhansali and me, but you can say I am too focused on my four babies (she is pregnant and expecting triplets + OSO) to worry about somebody else’s. But it’s natural for a filmmaker to be stressed out about another big release around the same time. Sanjay and I are no exceptions. Once both the films are released, we will be back to our normal happy grind.” Farah claims that she has watched all of Bhansali’s films and she will also do so with Saawariya. On wishing the competition Sanjay, his team and his film luck, Farah said “Sanjay is a far bigger and better director than I am; I think he should wish me. He has made a bigger film than mine, I need his prayers.”
Saawariya is a beautiful mystical love story which is said to be based on the short story ‘White Nights’. The film is the launch pad for star kids Ranbir Kapoor, son of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, as well as Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Anil Kapoor. Apart from that the film also has special appearances by Bhansali’s favourite actors Salman and Rani. Saawariya is full of opulence and grandeur which is Bhansali’s trademark style. It revolves around the evergreen romantic love story. Music for Saawariya has been composed by Monty Sharma and is soulful, melodious with a classical appeal. Unfortunately one of the highlights which had Ranbir Kapoor drop his towel to reveal his backside has been censored by the censor board. Ranbir and Sonam have been promoting their film on various reality dancing and singing shows. Salman Khan too who is extremely close to Bhansali has promoted Saawariya. The film has received a tremendous advance booking with the film going house full for the week-end.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali says “It’s the week of my release and I’m not thinking of anything at this point. I love Farah a little more than she does me. There’s no rivalry, but yes there was a misunderstanding and I was hurt because I have always respected Farah, we go back a long way.” Sanjay claims that he too will go to see Om Shanti Om in a few days time. He says “This Diwali should be a double bonanza for viewers, and there ought to be double the amount of firecrackers burst. Why should there be competition. I pray that both of them create a dhamaka, everyone should be happy and merry.”
With two big films at the box-office a new trial trend has emerged as bookies have started placing bets on which film will do better at the box-office. The bookies have waged their bets on Shahrukh starrer Om Shanti Om as SRK is one of the biggest stars and has given maximum number of hits. OSO will also have a grand premiere in Leicester Square in England. SRK also organized a premiere in Mumbai with bigwigs like Amitabh, Abhishek, Rekha and others turning up for the event.
Saawariya also had a grand star studded premiere in Mumbai with celebrities like Salman, Rani, Ranbir, Sonam, Hrithik, Priyanka, Lara, Sushmita and many more walking the red carpet.
So it remains to be seen whether Om Shanti Om or Saawariya will be bigger and better this Diwali?
