Movies that convey a meaning
Bollywood is not entirely about the entertainment, it is also about raising awareness about a lot of things and making people think. Here is a list of movies that entertained people and also made them think about the message and the lesson the movie attempted to convey.
1.Page 3: Page 3 was a Madhur Bhandarkar movie that combined a lot of elements of movie making. It spoke about a lot of important social causes such as child molestation, corruption, human trafficking etc. Amidst all of this, it also spoke about the dangers of a high society life. The director spared no sensitivity in dealing with these matters of great importance.
2.Chandni Bar: Another movie by Madhur Bhandarkar- this movie talks about the life and the conditions of bar girls or exotic dancers in Mumbai city. These are the women that are shunned by their own people- the movie was quite a heart-wrenching account of the plight of these women.
3.Bombay: This movie is one of the best movies directed by Mani Ratnam. It deals with a lot of sensitive issues of society such as inter-religious marriages. It also talks about the communal riots that plagued the country, especially Bombay during the time of release of the movie. The ending of the movie, with people from all religions coming together and joining hands against violence was quite a heart rending one.
4.Swades: Ashutosh Gowariker teamed up with Shah Rukh Khan to make one of the finest movies about nationalism in the country. 5.Peepli Live: This was one of the finest satirical movies of Bollywood. It talks about media propaganda and exploitation as well as the problem of farmer suicide. The movie received a lot of critical acclaim and praise, even though it did not have too much of an impact on the masses.6.Taare Zameen Par: This was a beautiful movie about the story of a boy with dyslexia who has to deal with parental pressure of performing well at school. It throws light on parental pressure and the Indian education system that only judges students on the basis of their marks. This movie did not only get wonderful critical reviews, it was also really popular among the masses.
7.Rang De Basanti: You know that a movie has come up with a strong statement and inspired people when it helped launch tens of candle light vigils and marches all over the country. Rang de Basanti did not only speak about corruption among politicians and bureaucrats, it also spoke about the importance of the involvement of people, especially the youth and the importance of learning from one’s history.
8.Paan Singh Tomar: This was a beautifully told story that talks about the plight of the athletes who strive to protect the country and make it proud, but get no recognition in the end.
