Cancer-free Manisha celebrates with Tabu, Jackie, Deepti Naval
Bollywood actress turned social activist Manisha Koirala recently celebrated the occasion of being cancer free for one year, on 2nd May. Close friends joined her at a small private party at the actress’s Mumbai home and that included actor Jackie Shroff, actresses Tabu, Suchitra Krishnamoorty and Deepti Naval. She shared photos from the gathering and also posted- “That was a celebration of one year cancer free. I m 1 yr old in my new life!! Sharing laughter with great friends. I love them. they are precious.”
She was also seen at the launch of a magazine dealing with cancer prevention which has her in the cover. While talking to the reporters she said, “It (cancer) made me realize health is important, eating right is important, exercise is required. There is a fear that it (cancer) can come back anytime. But one must be positive". The actress plans to use her celebrity status to inspire people who are fighting with this deadly disease.
The beauty from Nepal, started her acting career in Bollywood in 1991 with the super hit film ‘Saudagar’. This was followed by commercial hits like ‘Gupt’ (1997), ‘1942: a Love Story’ (1994) and she became one of the most successful actresses of the 1990’s. Apart from her mainstream films, she delivered many critically acclaimed performances in films like- ‘Bombay’ (1995),’ Akele Hum Akele Tum’, ‘Dil Se’(1998) and ‘Company’ (2002). Winner of several prestigious awards, her acting ability is recognized by all.
Along with her film career, her social service activities has also flourished over the years, She is actively involved with several organizations that deal with women's rights and violence against women. She is also active in her native land, working to prevent the human trafficking of girls from Nepal. Koirala was given the honor of being a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador when she was appointed in 1999. In 2010, she married businessman Samrat Dahal whom she met through Facebook, in Nepal. But the marriage dissolved in 2012.
The same year, news began circulating that the actress had
been diagnosed with cancer, specifically cancer in the ovary. Initially, she took admission in a
reputed Hospital in Mumbai. Later She
flew to the United States for treatment, however details of her ailment were
never disclosed. She underwent surgery
in December that year. It was reported the next day that the surgery had been
successful. Since then, she has made a full recovery and now wants to help
others do the same.
