After years of playing second fiddle to the west in terms of box office and star charisma, it’s now time for the Indian cultural army to storm Hollywood bastions. And with SRK’s latest salvo, ‘Main Hoon Na’, the west is almost won...
Believe it or not, but probably for the first time in movie history that a Hindi film is Number Two on the US charts. And this is due to the sheer numbers who are going to see ‘Main Hoon Na’ all across the USA , with Asians and people of Indian origin thronging the theatres in a crazy rush to catch the madcap caper.
Apparently, Farah’s tribute to the Manmohan Desai and Nasir Hussain genre of filmmaking has captured the fancy of all those who believe ‘ Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ .
According to well-known Trade expert, Taran Adarsh, “The film is creating a hysteria in the US markets unlike what has been seen before by an Indian film. Going by the average collections per number of prints, ‘Main Hoon Na’ has grossed US$ 570,000 in just three days of release (and this is even before the Sunday evening collections were accounted for); with an average per print working out to be US$ 6920.This places it second to ‘Mean Girl’ which also had a wide release and had an average of US$ 8670. And number three is the Denzel Washington film ‘Man On Fire’ which is averaging US$ 5020 per print. This makes ‘MHN’ a superhit by any standards. And considering it was released with 82 prints in North America , it’s making Hollywood eyebrows go up. Of course, we don’t release as many prints as a big Hollywood blockbuster, but still, on average we’re rocking the system. Also, inspite of ‘MHN’ figuring prominently on the charts.
To explain further, every week, the US guys have a top 100 chart based on average per print per theater. And on that basis, ‘MHN’ is no.2 on the top 100. And this is just US. Wait till the UK figures come in next week.” A stunned Taran informed.
Farah Khan was as stunned, “I almost fell off my chair on hearing this. It’s rare that our Hindi films make such a discernible dent in phoren charts. Everyday I’m getting news of ‘MHN’ breaking some record or the other. It’s proof of the King Khan’s wide ‘conquering area’. As for me, I’m thrilled that my first film is so magical. It’s all that I always imagined movies to be.”
And while the west is being won by the Bollywood brigade, we can only sit back and smirk and say, ‘we did warn you, now didn’t we?’
