Karisma [email protected]: Life, career, marriage and divorce

Actress Karisma Kapoor celebrates 40th birthday on June 25th. The actor also popular by her nickname ‘Lolo’ has had a successful career in Bollywood and was one of the most popular female stars in her prime. In recent years however, she has been making news mostly for her personal life. Karisma was born into the famous Kapoor family of Bollywood. She is the granddaughter of legendary Raj Kapoor and daughter of popular actor Randhir Kapoor. Her sister Kareena, Cousin Ranbir Kapoor and Uncle Rishi Kapoor all are popular Bollywood personalities in their own right.

She made her debut in 1991, at only seventeen years of age with the film, ‘Prem Qaidi’. The film was a semi-hit. For the next few years, she had only moderate success and most of her films were flops. The most notable films from this period are ‘Raja Babu’ which was a critical failure but a commercial success. Her 1994 film, ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ was an average grosser but has become a cult film over the years.  In 1995, she made a major leap in her career with the film ‘Coolie No 1’ opposite Govinda which was a huge hit. It was followed by another mega hit ‘Raja Hindustani’, alongside Aamir Khan. Over the course of next 5 years, she was part of several highly successful films with the top stars of Bollywood. These include, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ (Shahrukh Khan), ‘Hero No. 1 ‘(Govinda) and ‘Biwi No1’( Salman Khan). She has also done several performance oriented roles in films like ‘Fiza’ and ‘Zubeidaa’. From 2003 she took a break from films and acted in a TV series called, ‘Karishma – The Miracles of Destiny’. The series was launched with much hype but did not live up to the expectations. After several years of tumultuous personal life, she made a comeback in 2012 in the film, ‘Dangerous Ishhq’ which failed at the box office.

In 2002 she was engaged to Abhishek Bachchan but the engagement was called off in 2003 for reasons still unknown today. She married businessman Sanjay Kapur that same year. She gave birth to daughter Samaira in 2005 and son Kiaan Raj Kapoor in 2010. But it turned out to be an unhappy marriage as divorce rumors plagued them for several years. Karisma Kapoor moved back to Mumbai in 2012 to stay with mother Babita. The couple was mutually separated in May 2014 and has reached a settlement over the custody of their children.
