Interesting facts about 'Gulaab Gang'

Actresses Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Juhi Chawla and whole crew of ‘Gulaab Gang’ can now heave a sigh of relief as the Delhi High Court on Thursday cleared the nationwide release of the film.

‘Gulaab Gang’ ran into a controversy before its release. While the makers of the film have been saying from the beginning that the film was just a work of fiction and had no resemblance to Smapat Pal’s character, the activist has been alleging that the film showed her in bad light.

Reports in the media say the makers of the movie had moved the Delhi High Court against the suspension of the release of the film, reportedly based on the life of activist Sampat Pal, who formed Gulabi Gang, vigilante group of women wearing pink saris in Uttar Pradesh.

The filmmakers of ‘Gulaab Gang’ have also assured the bench that they would run a disclaimer that the movie is not based on the life of Sampat Pal and her work.

They had approached the division bench of Acting Chief Justice BD Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday had blocked the release of the film, which stars Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, saying that if the release of ‘Gulaab Gang’ was allowed, it would cause irreparable damage to the reputation of Sampat Pal.

“Reputation once lost is lost forever and cannot come back and can't be compensated in monetary terms,” the court observed.

According to an agency report, Sampat Pal had moved the high court seeking a restraining order on the release of the movie, saying the makers of the film did not take permission from her before making it, which showed her in bad light.

She had alleged that the actress playing her character was shown in a bad light in the promos of the film, too, which would affect her reputation.

She also contended that promos of the film show her as an anti-social element contrary to her real-life image.

But Sampat Pal has been reportedly expelled from the group that she had founded almost over 3 decades ago.

The film’s release comes as a blow to Pal, who is facing revolt within her group for supporting the Congress in the coming Lok Sabha elections. She stood on a Congress ticket from the Manikpur constituency in Chitrakoot district in the 2012 UP assembly polls.
