I am an innocent ‘yogini’, says drug accused Mamta Kulkarni

Former Bollywood actress and drug accused Mamta Kulkarni denies association in drug smuggling. She refused all the allegations against her and tagged herself ‘yogini’ and ‘innocent’.

“I am a yogini (ascetic). I am engaged in spirituality and it effects by activities since the past 20 years. I am innocent of the accusations against me,” Kulkarni, 44, said in a videotaped statement from Kenya’s Mombasa, where she is currently based.

"Don't look at me as an accused but as a victim of a conspiracy," said Kulkarni in a recorded speech played by her lawyers at a press conference here.

"My passport copies are there with all the entries, my bank statements are there....I have nothing to hide, the cops have seen my statements, they have not found anything against me, there is no single evidence," she said.

Now, she has written to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju demanding a probe against the Maharashtra Police to uncover the reasons behind dragging her name into the drug smuggling case.

“I have never engaged in any act contrary to the principles of Indian statutes and am a victim of high-handedness, crude, unprofessional and unethical conspiracy by the officers of the US’s Drug Enforcement Administration and the Thane police,” she said in her plea to the two Union ministers.

Another lawyer, US-based Daniel Arshack, who was also present, said when the Indian government asked the Interpol to issue a red corner notice against her, the international agency refused, citing lack of evidence.

"US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has long time interest in bringing her long-time friend Vicky Goswami - either to extradite him or bring him through India (to the US)," Arshack said, asking why the DEA officials visited Thane and why were they interfering in the probe. Kulkarni's Kenyan lawyer Cliff Ombetta said she was a "wonderful person and a friend", and had committed no offence. Memon said he had no confidence that she would not be arrested if she came to India.

Thane Police named Mamta Kulkarni as the prime accused in multi-crore drug racket case. Mamta Kulkarni's involvement came into forefront when Thane Police seized 20 tonnes of ephedrine in a record haul in April worth Rs 2,000 crore.

Mamta Kulkarni and her husband Vicky Goswami are prime suspects in drug racket case.
